It's PCGS's sandbox, so if you want to play here, you have to follow their rules. It's nice that Brett is publishing some of the unwritten things that will help those who like to push the envelope >:)

IMO, if you don't like the rules, find somewhere else to play. If the rules become too restricting (or the platform becomes too cumbersome to use) people will go elsewhere. As long as PCGS feels they are getting value from hosting this forum(PR, brand awareness, etc) they are going to keep the rules this way. There are things on here I don't like, but as long as the scholarship (which is dropping IMO) and information posted here continue to have value to me, I'll keep reading the posts

All this is true. It would also partially explain why participation amongst veteran posters who used to contribute a lot is down exponentially.

It is what it is. At the end of the day not that important in the grand scheme of things

    m

I don’t see anything in the rules targeting veteran posters.

There is nothing targeting veterans. I read it as some of them (veteran members) spend less time posting because of all the "drama." I cannot get most of the knowledgeable folks I've asked to even join CU just to lurk.

    Dear Mr. White,

Are you possibly a former PCGS administrator?

How about calling it Libel Of Late-night? That way when you ban them you can say "banned LOL". May as well have fun while you're at it.

It is simple. Our host is 100% funding this venture.. and for whatever reason. Thank you !!!! :)
It is a good and beneficial venture at no cost to members. I like to assume that our host hopes that all members exercise politeness, good behavior, respect for others opinion and above all , common sense when posting on the forum.
There may be occasions when something "comes out" not exactly as it was meant and hence is understood or interpreted the wrong way.
That, IMO, is when the Mods should try and clarify the issue before taking drastic actions. Perhaps via PM or right out on the open.
Remember, nobody is perfect! although, some might think they are :o
However, before someone is a candidate for "canning" by a moderator, every effort should be made by such moderator to rule out an honest misunderstanding. Should be easy???? right??? ;)
If everyone behaves, is polite and respects others, there should be no issues and Brett would not have to establish new additional rules.

Today is the first day of the rest of my life

I had a dream the other night: page after page at the forum was dominated by an inside-trader explaining to a classroom filled with sheep about the nuances of coin grading, thread after thread after thread. I woke up in a cold sweat, someone shaking me and calling my name. when I opened my eyes it was a giant coin, the whole thing really startled me!! I fell back into a deep sleep and upon waking I discovered that my post count was 10 and I had no badges, I didn't have no stinkin' badges, someone had taken my stinkin' badges!! :|

    Late night libations? ;)

A ban may not be obvious, in that, if it was not posted publicly; and sending “bad” PMs can get one in trouble, too; and we would never know.

Of course not. I didn’t say that. It’s a fact that many veteran posters are no longer here or posting less. The list is long. The forum has changed a lot in the past year or so.

    m

The rules don't seem that hard to follow. If people want to post elsewhere that may be for the best. It would certainly be a shame if PCGS shut down the forums completely.

Maybe not due to the rules, but due to the need for the rules.. get the distinction?

Nobody is safe from getting banned. One of the PCGS "experts" got it for who knows what?

Wish they would do it with some of those PMD posters.

I understand the distinction but that doesn't apply to what I think of as major forum participation changes, which mostly seemed to do with well known figures breaking the rules.

Several of those figures were completely unrepentant. They were begging for it and they got it. Those weren't arbitrary rule violations, but willful and repeated rule violations as they had been warned.

This isn’t rocket science. We’re all supposedly adults and with or without guidelines we should know what is inappropriate for any forum. If you walked into a restaurant and started shouting how awful the food is what do you think management would do? They would of course at some point rightfully throw you out.

I personally think that unwritten rules should be numbered in upper case Roman Numerals.

I sort of kind of disagree. The only time I ever think about this forum when I'm not on it is when I pick up a bashed penny in a parking lot. Brings a smile to my face...... Thinking about the trolls.

    1. Late night libel. The forum moderating team consists of four adult human beings, who all live on the west coast, and typically attempt to get some sleep each and every night. Intentionally saving trouble for late night isn't permissible. In my own mental ledger when you break our easy to follow rules after-hours it's two strikes, not one.

Seems like a ridiculous rule to me.
There are people who don’t live in california and are normally up when you all are normally asleep.

Justacommeman provided a reasonable explanation as to why I choose not to participate much as this is the first day in about 45-50 days I have participated. Read the comments on this thread... And how this has unfolded. I know my time is better spent elsewhere and I suspect several here are pleased with my decision.

There are things on here that will help awareness. If you don't like the publishing in the sandbox
or the platform of "if you want information, play here" as PCGS feels,
or becomes too cumbersome, invasive, or restricting, to use (which could also partially explain non- participation as the scholarship is dropping)
stop and think are you helping or hoarding.
To me I love the light hearted gesture this post states.
Grandfarthering the true aspectics of publishing, that represents yourself as a person, friend or teacher.
I believe it is provided as a service to our hobby.
In the grand scheme of things, I'll keep reading and making new castles with archers , draw bridges, moats........in the sand box that we share!

Brett, “Late Night Libel” sounds like a great name for a new, smash-hit TV show! 😉

    @BrettPCGS

If you need a weekend or occasional weekday part time moderator, I'd happily volunteer mainly to delete problematic posts leaving the rest (e.g. strikes/banning/anything super controversial) for you and Heather when you're back in the office.

    Breville. Brett Charville.

You actually can’t spell Breville without Brett Charville. You don’t even have to unscramble to get there. Coincidence? I think not

Hmmmmm. Is there some kind of emolument clause in the CU Forum Constitution?
