I think I caught the good side of this 15-d Buff I like so much. This one was purchased from my good friend, Andy, @Angel Dee's.
If you collect Buffalo Nickels do yourself a favor and take a look at his inventory, other series too. You will not be disappointed.

This is my hobby within a hobby. I love to image my coins.
I use a Nikon D750 with a 180MM macro lens. All setup on a copystand with daylight bulbs. I always try to get depth, pick up the color and luster. I'm now settling into our new home and finding time to get used to my new setup after losing my other one in a fire.

Very nice. Love the ice blue obverse and reddish reverse. Reminded me of my 36-D. I can't take pictures for anything but the TV captures it fairly well.

Most of the time I only use 2. Too much light will wash out the color and luster. Your shutter speed and aperture are also VERY important to set correctly. I shoot everything manually. Of course you must use a grey card to set your white balance correctly. Typically I use 75 watt bulbs for good light coverage sometimes I use 3 lights but that all depends on the subject matter.

Daylight and/or a grey card are not necessary, but it's good you found something that works so well!
I use 3 different lights that are all at the "tungsten" "color temperature" (5500 K).
One is a 75W PAR30 halogen. Another is the Ikea Jansjo. Last is a Kaiser 5500 (650W).
On my Canon camera, when in Program mode, I use the menu to set the white balance (WB) to "tungsten".
Then it does not matter what the background is. I use a white piece of paper.
Figuring out how to set the white balance on my camera was the most important thing I learned to improve my photos.

I’ve tried OTT lights before and discovered they cast a greenish hue somehow that I couldn’t work with. I remember talking about it with @robec, Bob, and he agreed that they do. So, I switched over to 75 watt daylight bulbs, the curly ones, and never looked back. At least “I” find the light spectrum and coverage works superb and is easy to control. Different strokes for different folks but the proof is in the pudding.
As, @yosclimber mentioned he uses a white piece of paper. Yes you can do that . White paper tends to reflect the light rather than absorb it. Or, you can use a grey card and get it perfect. That’s what a grey card is designed to do. With macro photography it’s important to get all cylinders firing correctly. At least that’s what I’ve discovered and what works best for me.
