Here is an interesting article from none other than the New York Times, reporting on Civil War tokens. Nice to read something near contemporaneous from the people that used these.

Interesting bit of currency history.... apparently allowed at the time....Now such things would result in arrest and incarceration...Well, unless clearly a store token for goods, not for commerce. Cheers, RickO
