Do you see your coins as Art?

I do.

Even when I collected regular coins I always went for the design.

Now that I go for junk, the junk has to be art.

Discuss if the art of the coin is what drives you ...

It is the beauty of the workmanship, form and substance, that is art -

on these shiny metal discs that draws me so.

Yes... I love coins that display art... which is why, at one point, I had two sets of gold Britannia's...truly a beautiful coin. I also have Double Eagles and Morgans.... It is my great disappointment that art on modern, circulating, U.S. coins is non-existent....Such a shame. Cheers, RickO

Most definitely. I long for a day when someone takes the lead as Theodore Roosevelt had and ushers in a new renaissance of American coinage. The United States Mint retains some very competent artists/sculptors more than up to the task. For now, I treasure what we have available.

Yes.... and history as mentioned above. More so in the last couple of years as my eyes were opened. Pan Pacific, Art Nouveau and Deco have grabbed me hard. I don't complain.

As to the history of coinage, it's not as important to me as I have an art background.

But, what I do find fascinating is the history of major error coinage.

So many stories. So much speculation and theories.

Midnight minting.

Some impossible errors.

The forklift story is interesting.

Brinks and other coin rolling companies with huge ballistic bags of coins directly from the mint.

The year 2002 that was a game-changer for the error coin market.

Growing up as a so called art major, 2 yrs commerical art and advertising
Vocational school, Art I, and II, all boys high school, 45 years printing industry.....!
Im full of the subject, "ART"
The creations that i've seen over the past year. Very CL.
I admire the whole process and the production.of the product.
All involved should feel proud of their contributions to this aspect of ARTING.
LOL. ...and feel ofended when people like us grade their work.
Been their done that. LOL.

Art for sure, along with history. Take for example a $20 gold piece—that once represented an excellent salary for a week.

Ditto. As for most of them made in this country (aside from some commemoratives and a few specific coin types) NO and not even close to artful. Roosevelt was 100% correct. If you want art, look to foreign coins and ancient Greece!

Some coinage I view as art. But for real (to me) art I turn to paper currency as an art.

For me coins are beautiful and are interesting pieces of design. However, if I want art, that is things that provoke thought and feeling, I get more out of other media.
