Numismatic whimsy

Oh shiny coin, with proof like or matte finish surfaces, how I love thee. Your intrinsic value casts an allure over me I can only satisfy with my American Express card.
Oh joy, the rapture of holding your heft, the feeling your of high relief surfaces gives me rise-
to get on eBay and buy 7 more, eight if I can get the schmuck who owns these pieces of ... I digress, where was I?
Oh shiny coin, with colorized and embossed surfaces and perhaps edge lettering, why do I seek thee? Why?
Is it because your metal Troy ounce content is 99.9% pure? Not debased, but purely elemental, as made by nature and some ingenious refining technology, rolled into sheets, punched into discs, ground, prepped and Viola- a con, excuse me, a coin is born.
Is it because I read on the internet that only 999 where minted, and the extreme rarity of this incredible proof 70 specimen is absolutely assured of increasing in....desirability, and will provide a superior return on your....time.
To most, coins are pocket change and will too soon be one more thing in our past.
To me, coins are art. They represent the best and worst of mans accomplishments. Coins document what is relevant to us at a given point in time and allow representation of value, equity, and substance - in the palm of your hand.
Why, oh why do I seek to own these precious mementos? To gain wealth, status, importance....?
No, I just like coins.

If I were a common coin with a mintage in the millions, I would roam far & wide doing what I was made to do.
If I were an attractive coin, I would wish to be owned by @Paradisefound.
If I were a top/pop that could never be improved, I would wish to be owned by DH.
If I were a counterfeit, I know Insider would cherish me.
If I were a PMD parking-lot-find, I'd be famously posted all over the Internet.
That's all Folks.
If I had a hammer, I'd swing it all day long.
Making error coins a plenty, who are you to say that's wrong.
This is my coin. There are many like it, but this one is mine. It is my life. I must know it as I must know my life. Without me my coins are useless. Without my coins, I am useless. I must grade my coins true. I must bid faster than the bidders who are trying to get it before me. I must get coins before they get them. I will. My coins and I know that what counts in a registry is not the coins we think about, the noise of our quest, or the smoke we make. We know that it is the wins that count. We will win.
Shining discs of silver and gold,
I collect both new and old...
Stacks and stacks of bullion bright,
Warms my heart on a cold winter night.
Cheers, RickO

U R quite a Poet @HJP ......... what a wonderful coin related treat read over my morning coffee
Very nice. One of my "All-Time-Favorite" coins!
I am carried by waves , casting shadows on the night,
alone as I journey with my coins.
My boat explodes upon rocks by the break of the light
as I search for the others who will join.
Some in the end will turn black as all death,
the curse of corrosion eternally lingers.
Others will remain blast white, protected from breath,
ensconced beyond my fingers.
You guys are funny
Nice work @HJP
My change: a nickel caked with finger grime;
two nicked quarters not long for this life, worth
more for keeping dead eyes shut than bus fare;
a dime, shining in sunshine like a new dime;
grubby pennies, one stamped the year of my birth,
no brighter than I from 40 years of wear.
What purses, piggy banks, and window sills
have these coins known, their presidential heads
pinched into what beggar's chalky palm--
they circulate like tarnished red blood cells,
all of us exchanging the merest film
of our lives, and the lives of those long dead.
And now my turn in the convenience store,
I hand over my fist of change, still warm,
to the bored, lip-pierced check-out girl, once more
to be spun down cigarette machines, hurled
in fountains, flipped for luck--these dirty charms
chiming in the dark pockets of the world.

Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
You don't understand! I was uncirculated! I could have been in a Mint State holder with a CAC sticker! I could've been a fresh coin, instead of a widget... which is what I am. Let's face it!
"Ya' cud 'ave been a contenda."
