@Insider2's thread today featuring a 50-D counterfeit nickel from China reminded me I had a 1950-D Jeff recently graded. For fun, here it is for a round of GTG.

it is a technical MS64 that was given a bump for color to MS65 and then they threw in the Step Designation because it's a 1950-D which will be sold for MS66FS money because it looks pretty.

I sort of agree with you, except I don't think the steps are all there, so I would call it a technical 64 that got a one point bump for nearly FS and nice color. I have seen a lot of 1950s nickels with that look and I am assuming the luster is not there for a 65.

Incomplete planchets wanted, especially Lincoln Cents & type coins.

At first glance the coin screams 68 with the strike showing that much shadowing around the devices coupled with the soft contours between the HL & RL. Then comes the deductions from marks.
I don't have the coin in-hand and I don't know what PCGS graded it. However, the overall look of the coin just said "MS66" to me so I went with it.
That's why I trust your opinions and overall and with all things considered you were very close. I was just speculating with other comments that were working the coin from the bottom up rather the top down. I guess 6 or a half dozen it doesn't really matter.
If the color is more vibrant and the coin has more flash than the picture shows I could go with MS65. The strike looks close to full. Weakness in hair and top of windows. The outer steps don't appear to be there. And there are 5-6 noticeable marks. Reminds me of a 52-D & 53-D I have, they lack luster with little flash but have nicer strikes.

I think the hits in the hair and on the reverse bring it to a 65... Cheers, RickO

66+ eye appeal but hits and spots put it in the 65 camp
Key coin so I would say 65 no FS
MS65. I agree with others, beautiful coin but lots of hits keep it from the high grade.
65 or 65+ for me, the luster appears subdued as well but still a nice coin.

Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
The question was GTG, not what I think the grade is. MS67.
If it's FS, I quit ......
If we were all the same, the world would be an incredibly boring place.

If it was graded 20 years ago and through NGC wouldn't it then have FS? Surely it wouldn't FS these days.

I'd call it a 66 no FS.

Thanks for playing "guess the grade" aka "grade my coin from a picture".
As is so often the case, the Trueview image doesn't quite capture the luster of this Jeff.
So with the color and the luster PCGS graders gave the coin a 66+. No FS of course.
Three minutes into this thread @mannie gray nailed it. WTG

Many times with Jefferson Nickels what you are seeing was on the planchet before the coin was struck.

Looks like an MS66 to me.

I trust your opinions maybe the + was for color.
@TomB . Take away the two biggest marks and what does it like to you now?
