A great thing about Stack's 50th anniversary is that they commissioned Frank Gasparro to create a set of silver medals.

Stack’s Turns 50

1983 was a super year for Stack’s. As the markets got stronger, old-time collectors regained their confidence and an avalanche of new collectors seemed to enter the hobby. This meant that Stack’s experienced great growth, both in over-the-counter business and at our auctions, and what happened in the company’s 50th year was just outstanding.

Very interesting that PCGS started as PCDS:

In 1983, a group of advanced dealers decided to form a service of their own, and the Professional Coin Dealers Service–or PCGS as it came to be known a few years later–was born.

Interesting that Stack's partnered with 3 others for "Auction '83". Stack's Bowers is a force by itself now.

For those who don’t know, Stack’s did that for a number of years, not just in 1983.

Over the past several years many have commented on the demise of coin collecting. Often citing that so many great collections came to market and how could they be absorbed. This article should quell concerns as just in 1983 so many great collections were auctioned off.

There are so many deep pocket collectors now a days that participate in a stealth like manner.

I don't think there's a question that the top of the top sees demand from deep pocket collectors, after all, even stamps still have deep pocket collectors. The issue that is often being raised is "everyperson" collectors, or the meat and potatoes of the market.

But all those top collections of the past 5 years or so were always going to deep pocket collectors. There were concerns that those couldn’t be absorbed and many questioned why they were getting out of the market to begin with. It did not portend doom. There is always a turnover. It’s healthy
