Anything published showing the diagnostics for specific counterfeit coins becomes out dated within five years of publication. While the older fakes are still around and SOME of the basic methods used to detect counterfeits still work, these books are now mostly starting points.

The best "book" on detecting fakes has not been compiled yet. Useful parts of that future reference are all over the Internet and reside in your own collection. That's because the "key" and most important requisite for coin authentication is: KNOW WHAT THE GENUINE COIN SHOULD LOOK LIKE.

There are two "old" Hawaiian fakes that are seen on occasion. about four decades ago, each of them were state-of-the art and very deceptive to most dealers. One has a :dog bone" depression on the upper right triangle and another has a circular depression over the outstretched hand. They still are more deceptive than the junk coming out of China today.

I think some members here will post some images for both of us soon.

I really appreciate threads that give pictures and PUP's of counterfeits here, both for my personal knowledge and for the benefit of others. One of the primary benefits of this forum is shared knowledge. Cheers, RickO

Here is a good thread from earlier this week which goes into some detail (with pictures) on the subject.

For a low mintage coin like the Hawaiian, shouldn't the PUP on the genuine coins be more useful? I would think the whole run came from one die pair
