Weight of worn dollars

ajaanajaan Posts: 17,613 ✭✭✭✭✭

A new Morgan dollar is supposed to weigh 26.73g
A new ASE is supposed to weigh 31.1g

Anyone want to take a guess at the weight of both these worn coins?

ASE

Morgan

I found the weights to be very interesting.

Why not just tell us? That would be even more interesting.

I have never seen a ASE that worn before. How long have you been carrying it in your pocket?

    That's how I bought it.

When I was working at the coin shop I used to pull "slicks" out of junk silver rather than resell it to our retail customers. About twice a year we would do a melt of miscellaneous scrap silver and I would throw them in there to keep the net fineness up.

One year I weighed the "Slicks" as a group out of curiosity. THe lot was about 7% light compared to new coins.

It would have been more fun to guess. Thanks for ruining it for the rest of us. ;)

Next time you post a poll, please include the option: I don't want to answer because it would be more interesting if you just told us.

Perhaps I saved you from embarrassment. <3

I've been weighing coins of all types and all conditions for years. I'll have to post some of the results BUT I don't have any records below AG.

When have I ever worried about being embarrassed?

I embarrass myself all the time. It does bother me.

Just weighed four G-6 Peace dollars:

    26.01
    26.11
    26.13
    26.13

Interesting how they are both .99 at the end. Almost like one day less in the pocket wearing down and they would be an even number. :)

This is fascinating! Could be a future method of grading coins based on loss of mass.

Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

Those are really slick coins.... A lot of time as pocket pieces (that is a guess of course)...The weight loss is significant though, a bit more than I would have guessed...Cheers, RickO
