What’s going on with this quarter?

Hey everyone, I need some expert insight into this quarter.

It has been in a few different holders over the past few years and I can’t tell what’s up with the colors and if it’s been tampered with. Below are 3 pictures of the coin in different holders. The bottom is the current holder it’s in. To me it looks drastically different in colors from the first picture. Do you think it’s been tampered with?

This is it in a PCGS PF66 holder (one of the coin facts plate coins for this date):

This is it in an auction last year in an NGC PF65* holder (#4196976-004):

This is it this year in a PCGS PF65 holder (#37234791):

Noting the consistent spots and irregularities, my amateurish guess is the quality and/or technique of the photography makes the difference. If so, this is a great example of how radically different a coin can look depending on how it's photographed, thanks for posting.

It's just the lighting in the photograph. Of course, you are left to wonder what it actually looks like in hand...

Dipped and retoned is what it looks like to me.

Agree with the dipped and re-toning. The very same thing happened to the 1894s in an up coming auction. Bright white twenty some years ago when it last sold.

That happened, probably long ago. That's not why the pictures are different. If you go to the Stack's site, you'll notice the close up photos always have different coloring than the full slab shots, especially for NGC slabs where the teflon insert shadows the coin. It's amazing what a change in lighting will do.

Does anyone know what the coin looks like 'in hand'?? Perhaps one of the pictures is accurate...maybe not. Cheers, RickO

I bid on it in the heritage auction this week because I was curious to see it in hand, I was outbid though. Probably for the better because the untoned blotch on the 4th star from the left is distracting.
