Short ANA Report

willywilly Posts: 361 ✭✭✭✭✭

Went Wednesday for a couple of hours. First show in about 15 years for me. Had 3 coins to pickup from HJB that were purchased on there website. I thought the coin show was busy and there were more young people than I thought wandering around.. Saw lots of young people at tables with walk behind cases looking through boxes of slabs and doing deals. Not sure if these are dealer employees or collectors buying and selling. Seemed like lots of activity. One older gentleman was writing out a check for a couple of nice Bust dollars. Lots of great displays and saw some nice coins at Legends table and Joe Connors table.

I am working on a 7070 type set and was able to fill in a few slots some common modern items and a 1826 Bust half from Stacks auction ex. Friend probably paid too much but I like it. Also picked up nice 1917 Quarter MS66FH CAC, 1900 PR67 Nickel CAC, 1830 half dime MS 64 toned, 1854 Arrows half dime toned CAC, 1943-D Silver Nickel MS67FS.

Also bought about 8 Washington quarters to finish my Dansco BU set. Only problem is some of the higher dollars ones are still in plastic and I have not gotten up the nerve to free them from there plastic tomb but I will soon.

One thing about this show is it is so big that it be comes a little overwhelming for a person like me who does not attend many shows. I have been to smaller ones in the past which are less overwhelming but it was nice to be able to find some nicer CAC type coins.

I was surprised at how active the world coin area was not sure if that is good for US coin prices going forward or not.

It was a pleasure to attend and I look forward to more coin shows in the future.

Thanks for the report. Foreign coins in general seem to be popular. Design, age, condition
and price have a lot to do with their popularity. I would not "break out" any of the Washies
unless you are willing to accept 20% of the price you paid at selling time. I never break any
plastic over $150 in value. Do not break the 32-d, 32-s. Thanks again, wish I could be there.

Nice report. Resist the temptation to break out the slabbed coins. Like it or not, today's market is a slabbed market IF you want decent money. Once raw the coins will lose most of their value to the great majority of potential buyers.

    Thanks for sharing!

It looks like you don't post very often (under 30 times in 18 years :D ) so I am glad you decided to share the report. I truly enjoyed it!

I'd love to see pics of that Dansco Washington set. I can safely say that raw Washingtons are my favorite coin...

I'll be the voice of dissent regarding cracking. If you are working on a physical 7070 you can decide what price point and/or condition point you feel comfortable putting in it. Crack anything below that if you want. Yes, there is a financial hit, but unless you are trying to flip or turn a profit, so what. The hit is not that big---all you'd have to do is resubmit it and pay the CAC fees. Assuming the coin is suitably graded in your opinion.

I have a 7070 that I occasionally work on, including the gold page. Yes, I cracked an MS-63 CAC $10 Indian. I told the guy I bought it from I was doing that and I think he just about had a coronary event right then and there. Good thing I didn't mention the former old green holder Saint that's in the album too (it was cracked before CAC was a thing).

That said, my 'serious' collection is Japanese and the 7070 equivalent has roughly up to $500 coins that have been cracked for it. No full red, and no blast white silvers, and not my best off metal (tin/aluminums). I keep the album in the archival sleeve inside an Intercept lined collectibles box. But anything with a delicate surface (the tin ones especially) regardless of value, or of a value across my threshold ($500ish) stays in a slab. Consequently I have a raw set and a slabbed set.

In any case, my point is that you get decide what quality and/or cost levels you are comfortable with in an album then crack away. They can always be put back in tombs later for a small fee :D

Thanks for the report. And I'll second the crack-away message. They are your coins. If you will enjoy them better in a Dansco then that's where they should be.
