Rediscovered after 52 years.....

littlebearlittlebear Posts: 1,557 ✭✭✭✭

When I graduated from grade school some 52 years ago, I was awarded this 2 1/2 inch bronze medal from the American Legion for an essay I had written. It has remained stored in the box, along with the corresponding pin, since June 1967. It was made by the Medallic Art Co. It has amazed me that I had this packed away for over half a century! It makes me wonder how many "treasures" we as a group have stashed away and forgotten.

Nice - do you still have the winning essay?

Sadly I do not. With many of my family serving in the military, you can bet it was quite patriotic. It was a different world then.....

Would the American Legion have a copy of the essay?

I ask because recently I found a high school term paper I wrote in 1965 about the elimination of silver in US coins.

Would seriously doubt it. The building housing the American Legion was condemned decades ago, but still stands as a historic building in danger of collapsing, if it hasn't already. Sad.

This has really brought me down memory lane! I recall my late brother playing "Taps" at the Memorial Day celebration. Many of the ladies in their 60's were widows of the servicemen who died in WW1! I feel like I am part of a time-warp!

Have you ever thought about posting your term paper. I can remember the severe coin shortage in 65-66, it was an interesting time and I would like to read your view of this as it was taking place.

That is a very nice medal.... I am a Legion member, I will ask if they still do things like this... not likely though.... seems any reference to military or service in schools today is frowned upon....Very sad. Cheers, RickO
