I have never seen this mentioned before and I have watched hundreds of old car videos. I thought it was interesting to cross two of my interest old cars and coins. You can go to 11:25 to see what I mean if you don't want to watch the whole video.

I have dug various large cents with round or square holes which were used as washers by farmers to keep their equipment running. Interesting video. Peace Roy

I found 585,023,518 1 peso (post 1970 - 1983) coins from Mexico used as fillers for rust holes. Some literally are brazed together in sheets. They "fold" so you can, for example, remake a transmission tunnel out of 1 peso coins.

I would like to find an old car with gold coins .... even if they were used as washers..... ;) Cheers, RickO

That would be cool. Nobody would believe a holed gold coin. :)

If they had the money for the gold coin(s), wouldn't they have had the money to buy a washer?

    But I digress!

I take it that stainless steel washers were not widely available at the time. The whole point was rust resistance, right?

Apparently SS was not widely appreciated in households until at least 1930. https://books.google.com/books?id=sygDAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA31#v=onepage&q&f=false
