Wow someone destroyed a nice 1795 Half

Yup they destroyed an honest worn piece for a crummy attempt to change it to a 1796. Horribly done alteration too.

Over the years this forum has been active we have seen a lot of historical coins destroyed. It is just so sad.
Gack!
Wow, guess they forgot to change it to the draped bust design too.

The note with the Beistle number indicates the alteration that ruined the coin was done a long time ago, possibly before the 1929 Beistle half dollar reference book. The 1795's were not very valuable then, in my 1925 Star Catalog of prices Max Mehl would pay .75 to $1.50 for a 1795 flowing hair half dollar, but would pay $15 to $75 for a genuine draped bust 1796 half dollar.
Ditto. Very upfront on what happened. Coin could have easily gone in the melting pot many times.
so sad

Too bad.... though it appears to have been done a very long time ago....Not a coin I would acquire...Cheers, RickO
Oh my !!!
what a major bummer to see that
What a shame.
I'd still give him 100 bucks for it.
