Won this recently at kunker auctions and received it today. I always wanted one of these löser after hearing about them first during the Preussag Collection sale in 2016. It is the widest 2 taler i have and it is about as wide as a coin i wanted to be. This time i bought the book before the coin

Rudolf August, 1666-1685.
Löser zu 2 Reichstalern 1686, Zellerfeld. 57,68 g. Dav. 114; Duve 5; Welter 1827

Love it! That is a great piece. A 2T or 3T from Brunswick is on my long term wish list. What is the diameter of that beast?

  • Diameter is about 65 mm. It is thinner than a usual 2 taler.

Congrats on your acquisition @doppeltaler, but I want to offer you fair warning that these are addictive but also expensive. You'll spend your entire coin budget on too few of these multiple talers and still not make a dent on the number of varieties that exist.

And just to tease a bit:

(This is equivalent to a 2T)

(This is equivalent to a 2T)

(These are equivalent to a 2T)

These löser coins exist from many countries, the cheapest of which are from Austria (under the Habsburgs) and the Duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. (The ones from Belgium and The Netherlands seem to be the most expensive by region.)

How does one get a hater to stop hating?

  • EVillageProwler, first of all thanks for correcting the spelling for löser. Love your lösers, specially the half pound; amazing. I was once outbid on the 2 scudi , I think it was stacks bowers auction. They are indeed expensive, I won’t be buying any more 2 talers for a while 😣

Nice! A clear example of when size does, indeed, matter.
