Look at Photograde on the PCGS website.
As an aside, the MS65 coin illustrated shows amazing die clashing.
Here's my NGC AU58. I like it just fine.
Lance.
I recently “won” this in an auction as PCGS MS63 PCGS/CAC, sent it in for Reconsideration, and it came back 63+ despite the typical strike weakness (especially on the reverse). CAC sticker was automatically reapplied for $3 fee since Cert Number remained the same and grade increase was “only” a +.
My collecting “Pride & Joy” is my PCGS Registry Dansco 7070 Set:

Here are three pieces.
This first one is graded AU-55. I did not sell it when I got an upgrade because of the loss I'd take on it. These coins were much more expensive years ago.
This one is graded MS-64.
I actually like this one best, at least when you see it in person. It is graded MS-63.
Thank you all, some very nice coins and it shows me what is achievable. I guess patience is key, as I see a lot that are not nearly that nice.
I like the 1854 S date & have one that would post but am on vacation for the next week.
Well, just Love coins, period.
Actually patience has saved you money. The prices for these coins have been going down. When I bought the 1855 I posted above, I thought that it seemed like a cheap price for a really nice coin. Now it's not so cheap.
The 1854-S gold dollar is not a Type II gold dollar; it's a type one.
Because of the distance, the San Francisco Mint was always a bit behind the times for the gold dollar. For example the 1856-S, which might be the coin you had in mind, was the last Type II gold dollar and the last one issued for the design.
Whoops, you are sharp Young Bill.
I have both and you are quite correct as usual. Like 'em both - and yours as well.
Well, just Love coins, period.
Love this series... I completed a small type set years ago!

Unfortunately this beautiful coin doesn’t belong to me
It has been a pleasure to view all of these nice type 2 dollars. This coin has been on my acquire list for about the last 6 months. I had seen a number of nice coins, priced very high and a number of highly graded coins that I didn’t think looked nice(and were still fairly highly priced). I was honing in on au58 grade for this coin, but this is not my favorite gold type, so while while I didn’t want it to be just a spot filler, it was not a coin I wanted to spend too much on. Then this weekend, this coin hit one of the dealer websites favorably mentioned here often, was priced fairly from what I have seen before, and the dealer had a 10% discount promotion. As this coin grade matches the two classic head coins I bought, I decided it would be good fit for my collection. The coin Look, plus price, plus being a coin I wanted now, all converged and it now joins the affordable (might be code for low budget) gold type coin collection that I am working on.
Thanks to all for showing your examples and weighing in on this thread and some of the others where I solicit thoughts.
Nice pick!
