I just couldn't get it going ....... (NO LONGER)

Still inspired and crazy about coins but could not see myself motivated for any particular hunt.
Have you ever experience a temporary lack of enthusiasm ? Weeks or months before the next NEWP?
Any suggestion?

Maybe cooler days will take me back to it.
This is my last purchase and it is not even a coin some would said :(

It happens, I took a break in 2005 but the 2006 Gold Buffalo pulled me back in.

That 1919 BS Peace is nice, it's the lowest mintage BS so far.

Can't wait to see your next purchase,

Yes it happens but the collecting bug will bite back. I sometimes take a hiatus from coins for months. Try exploring another area of interest. Exonumia is a great place to explore.

Most definitely. Use the time you have waiting for the next great addition to your collection to review and admire what you currently have.
I've made meh buys just because I hadn't found anything I really wanted, and it didn't make me feel happy about it in the long run.
    Happy hunting!

I've been on and off for years. I seem to always gravitate back.

You need a nice, bright, high MS 1913 Type I Buff to re-light that fire in you.

Love the broken sword and all Dan Carr stuff. If your not in the mood for the buying side perhaps a break on that is needed. I took time to learn about World coins. Bought a book and sorted through about 2k coins. The knowledge and history has me inspired and helps us grow. Don’t always need to be on hunt. Try organizing what you have and go back in when you want

It is better to take a break than to buy something that you later regret out of boredom.

Perhaps a visit to a coin show or coin club would spark your interest in something new?

I had a government induced, year and a half hiatis from coins. It was hell. At some point I will tell the board about it. It will no doubt be a big mega thread when I do. (Hint it is what happens when you call out government corruption.)

It took a long time to get the enthusiasm back after that. Frankly being on this board helped me get the desire back. People share a lot of cool stuff.

I am kinda going through the "lull" right now. After I sold some of my collection this past May to pay off the IRS, I am looking at my coins in a different way. I have been contemplating selling off the remainder and starting on a new project.

That coin is tougher than you'd imagine. Lots of raw ones. A few slabbed but WAY overpriced.

Outside of a couple pieces I got in Spain, my coin hunt projects have been on hold for a couple years.

Now, much to my mental sanity chagrin, I have been dealing with an artist block since Nov 2017...my longest stretch in about 25 years. Miss my studio and slopping paint around, have lost my 'color' for a bit so to speak.

I do a ton of reading, numismatic as well as history. Seems to trigger new areas of interest for me, takes me in new collecting directions, things I never would have simply dreamed up. Travel does much the same.

No, but if you are buying that kind of stuff, you have in fact moved away from coin collecting to just collecting, so I can see why things would fade if that was me.

Any coin clubs near you? I am a member of a great club, there are a lot of fun members, and the presentations are very informative. It can expose you to a lot of different areas of collecting.

@Paradisefound I do what some others have already suggested. I have multiple hobbies. I collect PSA graded baseball cards of Nolan Ryan (my favorite player). I have a PSA graded 1973 Topps hockey set (first cards I collected as a child) and I do coins (US Type set) to keep things interesting. Try doing something else and go back a forth, like I do.

I wish you the best in whatever you decide to do.

I found that rather than feeling like I should be buying things for the sake of building my collection, I've really enjoyed sticking to finding a few pieces that I really want, and not worrying about how long it takes to find them. In that sense, I'm not as active a collector, but when I do get something, it's special and exciting.

Of course, you could always take up flying if you need a different expensive hobby :)

If you really think coin collecting is dull, I feel sorry for you and others who may share your opinion. There is so much to learn/collect and much of it is a keyboard click away. Coins even have ties to stamps and postcards! Try learning to clean a coin properly. That will keep your interest level high for a few decades. Heck, even CU has spiced things up for me since I joined.

If it's a hobby for you and not a business, don't worry about it. It probably means you've found something that is even more enjoyable that is capturing your attention. It's hard to believe that could happen in Hawaii, I know, but weird things happen. Coins will always be there and the infection isn't really curable.

  • ashelandasheland Posts: 23,767 ✭✭✭✭✭

Like the others, I have multiple hobbies, coins, the antique silver, even silver bars.. Despite all of that, I occasionally take breaks from buying, that's pretty normal. :)

Since you already have an affinity for D Carr pieces, you might expand your hunt for lessor known/lower mintage varieties. Crawl through his online catalog and there are many, many single digit mintages "hidden" in the stacks. What's interesting about his work is all the small lot trials he did (and continues) to perfect the art. Here's a Liberty Owl "Antiqued" I was able to get this year, mintage of 8.

There's been a lull in new pieces from him lately but there will likely be some really cool medals and tokens struck in the near future...some may be very bewitching! Hang in there and don't fret! :)

Been buying and selling coins for 15 years albeit at a much slower rate the last few years. The free money (upgrade, Cac) delusions wear thin in time. Market has collapsed on its own greed and hustle. Fortunately I sold off most of my inventory before the market heaved.

My suggestion is to forget about buying anything new and instead take a hard look at what you have now. I would identify those items that still stir your soul (perhaps 10-15%?) and sell the rest. For example, Do the bullion coins keep your interest after repeated viewings?

Once this is done, then take your time and only buy coins that measure up to your higher standard. Airplanenut’s comment above is similar to my thinking.

Glad to see you posting again.

I've been through a few more ups and downs than you. I know folks who have lost their shirt and others who have become rich with coins. I never consider the price a piece I buy may sell for in the future because I don't consider coin collecting an investment. I'm not going to become rich - except in knowledge. Therefore, I can say that my collecting "flame" still burns red hot in spite of working with coins every day. Glad to hear you got out of most of your coins.

PS While a coin is in our office for a few days, it is in MY collection! :)

It's very normal in the coin collecting field to take time off.

Take time and enjoy life. There's more to life than coins. Coins are great and coins are fun, but they are just part of a balanced life. Also, you don't need to buy coins to enjoy them. I haven't bought a coin in over 18 months (well, aside from the Apollo 11 5 oz., but I don't really consider that a coin), but I still enjoy coming to these boards and reading and posting here.
