Stolen PCGS 30th anniversary medals - keep an eye out!

LakesammmanLakesammman Posts: 17,464 ✭✭✭✭✭

Received a message from the seller of these medals - box cut open, USPS tried to deliver to recipient who was smart enough to check the box (empty) and refuse delivery. Lot sold for $1300 - keys were the silver medal given to founders of PCGS and a medal given to a employee, accounting dept., the latter 2 the most unique and identifiable.

If you have info, seller saen78 would love to hear from you.

    Damn, that's a shame.
Very unique and easy to identify.
Hopefully they won't end up being scrapped and hopefully the thief is caught.

Sidenote: If I received one of these as an employee, I would keep it forever.

    My concern also.

A co-worker was burglarized several years ago, and the bad guy van was involved in an accident, not even their fault. The damage was extensive, and they abandoned the van with loot still inside. In the van was a cooker, and his silver had already been melted.

Saw these on eBay. What a tragic lost. An important piece of history from our hosts.

"WE CARE" That's why someone accidentally drug a box cutter across the top and accidentally removed the coins and dutifully sent the package on. How wonderful to have such honest law abiding employees working in the mail system to handle all the valuables that may be sent through the system. It appears they have been given the tools to enable them to identify packages that are worthy of an "accident". Really is disgusting they get away with this stuff.

I saw these and had a nice conversation with him about the pieces. Too bad.

I often wonder if a lot of these usps thefts are by the subcontractors they hire.
Hopefully they were insured and will get full pool payout.

Of the 7 only 1 is silver - not sure what the others are made of but not a lot of bullion value for the risk of getting caught for mail theft!

That is very sad....obvious theft, and that letter just adds to the insult...Cheers, RickO

How would anyone know to slice the package to get coin/token?

The PP label has no postage amount nor state any type of insurance. The only way a postal contractor would know if there is anything of value is insurance amount or the to/from addresses.

    Are never good addresses, IMO.

Yeah, When I ship to someone whose address states anything that hints at coins I change it....Like Mike's rare coins would become MRC.

Edit to dd...I had a couple change their address after I do that!

Neither address on the label said anything about coins, both were home addresses.

I would be curious to know if the box felt unusually light (before being pilfered), or if the contents were shifting about a bit/rattling loose, even if bubble wrapped etc.

All the needed information - including insurance - is in the bar code. Every postal station has multiple hand held scanners and (at least in my city) nearly every delivery route person has a scanner. In this case the theft probably happened during city to city transit to garner the "Sorry" label -- it would really be ballsy for the thief to also add the sympathy sheet.

7 slabbed medals each individually bubble wrapped in a small priority flat rate box, there was no movement inside. The box was a bit heavy though.

Really?? I didn't know that. Another good reason to use 3rd party insurance - cheaper too.

Thanks for the info! You wonder if perhaps a bigger box would have gotten less notice (with extra padding to take up the room) vs a smallish box with a lot of heft to it. Disturbing to imagine the helpful postal employees scanning away to select boxes that seem to have a lot of insurance.

One other thought I had (depending on the value of the shipment) is a sealed box within a sealed box within a sealed box -- each with the basic "ship to" information on it -- I wouldn't mind this as a recipient; you'd imagine a thief hoping for a quick slash and grab would get frustrated. Not practical for an entity shipping 100's of orders, but maybe a good idea for occasional sellers shipping something of enough value?

Usually 3rd party insurance requires a box in a box. Not a guarantee of safety but harder to access contents.

I've received boxes where the contents are firmly taped to the inside of the inner box - now I understand why.....

Well, the thief got something that will be almost impossible to sell. Most of the value is in the provenance and holders.
