How many more coins before your collection becomes a hoard?

I don't see that size alone defines a hoard. To me, a hoard is a large number of unrelated coins and/or a large number of duplicates, frequently not well organized and/or "dreck".

I have an Excel spreadsheet with my "plastic" collection - up to line 815 - must officially be a hoard......and I know there are a lot of slabs that haven't made it to the spreadsheet......

First of all; I believe in quality over quantity.

Secondly; I think that hoards contain many duplicates. My coins are parts of sets and have few duplicates.

There's a method to my madness....

In that case I have a hoard. But, I started the hoard over 60 years ago before I was in kindergarten. So.....an 800 coin hoard over that length of time works out to a little more than12 coins a year. Or one a month from then to now. Oh well.

I don't think the number of coins matters, if the average value is above $10, it's a collection, below $10 a hoard, below $1 a disorder.

I had a collector friend who owned 44,000 coins by his count
US and foreign and not junk widget coins! He was a well off collector and a had a top
numismatist cataloging his collection sitting on weekends in his house
working on them. He traveled the world for pleasure but buying in every country.
so many coins! amazing.

Not at all in my case. When I started collecting as a kid back in the 1960s, I really dove into it and knew the mintage of most dates of the coins that could be found in circulation at the time. I sold my collections a few times when I needed money (e.g., while a student), but I never lost my interest in coins. I have a very small collection now, and my focus has turned to getting interesting coins for a young collector in my family. I look at coins from the perspective of a form of art and its preservation. I don't have any desire to possess a large collection.

To be classified as a collectible hoard (Redfield, Binion...) I'll say 5000.

As far as "I have a disorder and can be on the show hoarder's" 10,000 with the value being face. The differentiation is primarily in the value.

I suppose in using 800 as a benchmark, the best collections assembled were all hoards. I don't know what was in it but I read that Virgil Brand had around 350,000. It sounds like a hoard. On the other hand, Eliasberg and Norweb or less prominent ones like Huntington, I would not call it that.

I recently bought 2 unopened mint sewn bags of copper memorial Lincoln’s. I had a couple already. Lincoln’s are not my primary focus. I think I have a disorder.

I have collections and hoards. Walkers, large cents, type album, Buffalo nickels are collections. I know what’s in them and what I would someday like to acquire.
The hoard primarily came from a very large estate and a few smaller estates I purchased years ago. Even after selling off bulk groups of rolls of wheat cents Indian buffalo nickels, currency, Canadian large cents, better Canadian coins of many types etc., I still have boxes of stuff left. Post 1960 bu rolls, British coins of all denominations spanning 3 centuries, proof and mint sets, stacks of Whitman folders for US and foreign denominations, old Spanish silver in sheets of 2x2s, more in envelopes in boxes to sort someday.

Once I can no longer keep track of anything I have, it's a hoard. After that, once I establish an eccentric public persona, it becomes The Messydesk Hoard, and eligible for special labels. Neither is a goal.

I would not let this happen, selling off common junk is really annoying. I would rather have 50 nice coins than 1000 bits of junk with a few nice coins in the mix. It's a nightmare to liquidate.

in trade dollars with chopmark terms, the word "hoard" was used when collections of 80 coins sold.

I have over 40 myself. I guess I'm a bit over half way there!

It was already a hoard less than 2 years into buying. Getting tempting again to start dumping at least the gold portion of the hoard. All the silvers guess will have to wait. Even if I dump 95% of it I suspect I'd still have a hoard. lol

Hundreds of plastic coin tubes filled with Bicentennial, Statehood and National Park quarters. At least three dozen each of cents through small dollars. All cherry picked from circulation/bank wrapped rolls. Granted, none may ever be much above face in terms of value, so yeah...I have a slight problem. And I have not begun to add the many complete series I have as a collection (Every denomination from 1938 to current completed-two ongoing into the 1800's. Proof and mint sets from 1955 to current.).

Hoarding takes the fun out of anything and everything ....... I think it's some kind of emotional issue to start hoarding and maybe it is a sign of time to sit in a winged chair IMHO
