Coin shopping vs grocery shopping

Compare and contrast.

Do you find yourself dropping a grand on a coin that you don't really like the look of, yet walk away from the Boars Head Genoa salami because it is ten bucks a pound?

I've known several gentlemen who preferred selling coin collecting supplies and books on coins simply because they preferred the lower and slower but reasonably certain markups on those staple items compared to the larger but uncertain markups (and other risks) when selling collectors coins and related items.

The late Great Ralph Winquist of Rockford comes to mind first, but he was not the only gentleman to do very well following this more standard/customary line of business.

And remember...if you see a green spot on the liverwurst, it isn't a CAC sticker.

I'm careful in the meat and dairy section as far as buying things that still have some life in them, and avoid the reduced for quick sale items, but I have absolutely no issue with hitting the day old bakery rack for cheap bread and rolls.

    1. scarce die marriage
    2. key date hole filler
    3. upgrade candidate
    4. price was too attractive to take a pass on.

I do buy on a regular basis the Boars Head Genoa ........because at $10 / pound it is way less expensive than rare coins.

Over time, I've gotten better at buying coins I honestly LIKE the first time....

But I still have a deep-seated fear of finding one I like a little bit better, selling for 5% less, 10 minutes later in the next aisle.... ;)

Added thought, of questionable value: And isn't that the problem! In a supermarket, all of the toilet paper is in the same aisle! You can compare quality and value on the spot! Coin shows need to put all of the seated halves in aisle 1, and the Indian cents in aisle 2, etc....

When it comes to the look of a coin whether it be $5 or $1k or more, if I don't like it then I am not going to buy it no matter what. I passed even bidding on a coin a couple weeks ago because there were a couple things that bothered me slightly about it. I figure that if it bothers me a little now, then later on I will be wondering what in the **** I was thinking. Deals on coins are almost never good, deals on grocery items can be good because it saves you money. Deals on subpar coins aren't really deals.

The farm is my grocery store and I couldn't imagine trading that for any coin in the world.

When I do drop a grand or more on a coin that sucker better contain at least .9675 oz of the Au.

The whole worlds off its rocker, buy Gold™.

Maybe I am different. Just like with coins, I pay up for what I like when I'm food shopping. For me shopping for coins or shopping for food is the same. I pay up for what I like and I pass on what I don't. Cheap or an expensive price tag or sticker has nothing to do with it.

How about coin shopping vs recreational medicine shopping.

You can go the corner med store and they have fresh stinky private reserve or they have old blah top shelf.

I go in with a coupon to get the private reserve at 20% off or in other words low wholesale :D

Buy the best at low wholesale.

I can go down to the corner store in California and buy legally something fun. I drive to Arizona to go gold mining and all of a sudden I am a Felon. How on earth does that make sense?

I did a search of Ralph because you had mentioned Rockford. I had been to Rockford Coin and Stamp a few times. Nice people, dangerous area. Heard they got robbed a couple of years ago. Rockford is a very dangerous town......be very careful if your a visitor there.

  • BillDugan1959BillDugan1959 Posts: 3,821 ✭✭✭✭✭

@air4mdc Rockford never bothered me in the past, but it has been at least ten years since I have been there for more than a three hour visit. Not a conscious choice, just how things work out. The old downtown near the Rock River was always a bit rougher than the periphery. I feel much the same about Rockford, Peoria and Decatur - slightly elevated caution. All three towns have their very nice areas too. While it is not good to be the victim of a crime, it is statistically inaccurate to call Rockford "very dangerous".

I worked in Rockford for nine months (consulting position) and had a great time...I guess I never went into the 'bad' areas....I still keep in touch with some of those people I worked with...Did not know about a local coin shop when I was there....Cheers, RickO

Eat venison all year long, jerky, burgers, steak, sausage, stew etc. Been quite awhile since I've bought any kind of meat.
There is cost associated to hunting deer, time, effort (dragging and gutting), ammo, gear, having it butchered and so on.
It's worth it because I pretty much know it's history from start to finish, jmo.

The late 1970s and early 1980s really stripped out the Rockford manufacturing base and the city proper has had a rough go ever since. Rockford has picked up a considerable medical presence in recent years (expanded hospitals and a medical school). IIRC, in the early 1980s, the best local coin shop was ran by Ralph Winquist's nephew. The family may still have that shop.

@BillDugan1959 ...I worked there in 2012-2013, and manufacturing was indeed limited. I stayed at hotels (funded by the company) in the area with all the malls, restaurants etc., so really did not see the old Rockford. Cheers, RickO

Do a google search of “worst cities to live in” and “ most dangerous cities to live in.” Rockford always makes the list. I think one year it was #2 and Little Rock was #1 for most dangerous.

I don’t t ask her what she spends on groceries.

She doesn’t ask me what I spend on coins.

    Helluva deal! 🙂
