I found a "one of a kind" Overstrike but can't recognize what was struck under it?

1983 P Dime -- Can clearly see raised image and letters under Jefferson, also design on back under and around torch and letters?
I can't find any overstrikes for this year documented?
Who can help?

I'm calling this one "The crying Jefferson"

I'm not seeing Jefferson, but will wait to see what the error experts here have to say.

I do see what you are talking about but can't help with the explanation.

Welcome @Coinhunter237 to the forums. That looks pretty cool.

Is that a D under STATES on the reverse?

I like it. While die clashes are fairly common, it's seldom that you see one with that MUCH of the design transferred. A "show and tell" keeper.

Strongly clashed modern issues aren't exactly rare but they aren't exactly common either, at least not with clashes that are this prominent.

To be clear, every single coin produced from this set of dies after it was clashed will look just like the one you found. So, unfortunately, it isn't "one of a kind". Finding another might be difficult though. They use a boatload of different dies for most moderns.

Nice strong clash. I have seen clashes like this on 1892 Barber Dimes.

Though not one you are going to get rich on... a nice strong clash and a good find.

The reverse die and obverse die hit without a planchet, causing both the dies to have some impression of other side - this is called a die clash. The dime from that period is Roosevelts' head, Jefferson is on the nickel.

  • I was told if I went on a site like this to be dramatic with my description or my post would more than likely be ignored or overlooked--and to act stupid (hence the Jefferson) so someone might feel more apt to help. You guy's are all great and for real--I see now that was bad advice and a dumb approach. I really do want to thank each and everyone of you--drinks are on me guys, cheers. (smile)
