Lighted Loupes?

Given how variable (and bad) lighting often is at coin shows, I’ve considered a good “self lighted” loupe for such occasions. Theory being: If you get used to using one, the light should overpower the ambient light, and make looking at a coin at a show just like what you are used to at home(?)
I saw a few at the local show today at the “supply” dealer, but they were without exception off-brands, no-name brands, and un-pronounceable brands. So, it's probable that the optics of the lens is suspect, at best.
So, first: Anyone care to comment on the utility of a self-lighted loupe? Like ‘em or hate ‘em? Am I assuming too much about the usefulness?
Second: Anyone know of a reputable brand that includes actual, honest to goodness, good optics to go with the lighting? Any recommendations?
Comments
I tried one once and didn't like it.
I tried a few and settled on this one. Had it for a few years.
I've tried a couple and tossed them. I'm happy with a good quality 5x.
Lance.
I've tried a few, they're not very practical. Given how awkward the angle of the light is, along with the poor light itself I didnt find them to be of any help.
My sister bought me one for Christmas a few years ago and I prefer my normal unlit one. I still have it around here somewhere..
I have used them and aren't to fond of them.
HAPPY COLLECTING
Any lighted loupe would probably use LED bulbs. More than a single point light source would hide scratches and other important marks.
Better to bring a small halogen light if need be. I have seen collectors and dealers pull a light out and set it on a table to look at coins.
They’re good in a pinch or better than nothing but I would constantly get a blinding blast of light mirrored in my eye on MS coins. I demoted mine to the bathroom for splinters and such.
I think your into a good point with the quality issue as well. I've come to the conclusion that a quality loupe will minimize distortion, have a larger clear field of view and therefore naturally let more light in. I like my Zeise that I paid 125.00 for. Sounds expensive up front but it’s saved me untold amounts of money showing me the real story on coins I’m considering.
The Lighthouse company sells pretty good stuff.

I prefer my Zeiss loupe and I always carry at least two flashlights, so I can add light if needed. With the loupe though, it is rarely necessary. Get good quality glass, you will be happy with that. Cheers, RickO
