They seriously need to get a better safe for that thing. Apparently anyone can just steal it and put it in the mail! :D

The Declaration of Independence was a regular item in the BEP catalog for several years or more. I guess the inclusion in the Mint's catalogue has increased business.

I am sure they will make some more at some point.

The larger engraved items are less common, though, as a lot of work goes into them. Somewhere I have a huge reprint of an award certificate originally issued for either the World's Columbian Exposition or PanPac. The large prints are very impressive.

BEP's steel plate engraved edition is a wonderful reproduction. Last time I checked, they were being made by hand on a large plate press. The same technician had been doing most of the work for several years, and was extremely careful about print quality.

A few of these exist printed on special parchment, also. I think one is in the Speaker's office.

Hobby lobby has these frames 69.95 but next week half off. I dident want to wait. Jus take staples out of booklet show certificate and yes the bird & bell. It is greater looking then my pictures. I put my receipt in bag in back of frame I used the command tape to set it in place for the booklet let the cardboard backing do the rest. Used nothing to damage.

Hobby Lobby always has a coupon online for 40% off any item that you can print.

Do you happen to know the dimensions of the one that was in the BEP Catalog? Was it larger/smaller/same as this one from the US Mint's site?

I am sure it is the same one. As far as I know all BEP stuff is only sold thru the mint now.

The "special parchment" is real parchment, not paper, but all the versions are excellent.

    @Kkathyl Nicely done, congrats.

I missed out on these, had a reminder that I will buy a month later because I thought they wouldn't sell out that fast.

Anyway, here is the reason I wanted to get one from the Mint/BEP. My copy of Declaration of Independence (12x16) with unknown paper to me and it came with unusual information page. Got it in 2014 but not sure where I got it (had an I idea where I got it but I have to verify before mentioning it.)

Will keep an eye on Mint/BEP's site in case they issue some more.

    Thanks.

That looks like the kind of souvenir copy that had been sold by decades by various companies, but many come heavily folded and yours appears to be unfolded. The people who market these copies call the paper "parchment" and it is supposed to mimic what someone thinks old documents look like. In reality, the high quality paper of the Colonial era does not look all wrinkled and crinkly like that, although it can sometimes tone to a light brownish color. One thing to be careful of is that the process to "age" these modern copies can leave the paper subject to further deterioration. If left in sunlight it will likely continue to darken and become brittle.

The BEP prints (printed by the intaglio process) are worlds apart from the copies that most people are familiar with.

  • Thanks for sharing - excellent work.

As you should be, great job. If I may offer one suggestion, keep it out of direct sunlight. It's a fine display. Congratulations.

I have a copy that I bought from the Mint around 2006. I had it framed at The Frame Factory and it's mounted at my front entrance so you can't miss it. It's good to read through it and inspect all the signatures from time to time.
