Oops I mean Buddha.
5.5 tons solid gold. 9 feet tall. Saw it today in Bangkok. Interesting story behind it.

Yeah I’ve been there too! It was a lacquer Buddha, but when they went to move it they dropped it and the lacquer chipped. Turned out to be solid gold beneath. Speculation is it was covered in lacquer at some point in forgotten history to hide it from invaders (if I remember correctly).

I think Buddha is trying to tell me something.

My niece posted a picture on FaceBook just today from Thailand of a similar "gold" Buddha. Different one, and hers appears a bit too yellow to be actual gold.

But, I'm going to go meditate on this odd coincidence…. :)

    For your comparative analysis:

Not all Gold Buddha's are created alike! (Niece is on the left. Say "Hi".) ;)

That one is probably gold leaf, which is very common in Theravada Buddhism.
It’s not letting me upload pics right now, otherwise I’d put some up from when I visited the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon (it’s worth a google search).

I suspect the leaders of the country knew an invasion was imminent so they came up with the idea of creating the Buddha using the nation's treasury. By covering it in plaster, they hid the nation's wealth in plain view from those who who have absconded with it for their own purposes.

Can you imaging the leadership of the US doing something similar and hiding the nations gold in plain view by building a new Statue of Liberty and painting it green (the color of copper tarnish). 😆

Yes, it was covered in plaster to hide from invading Burmese in the 1300’s. It sat like that until 1951 when they cracked the plaster trying to move it and discovered it was gold.
