I do wish they'd go to a national tax that applies to everyone equally. As things currently stand, if you are in a state that either has a coin exemption or no internet sales tax, you are at a competitive advantage over us poor slobs in sales tax states.
You want me to abandon my octagenarian parents?!?!?
Have them move to Florida like all of the other old New Yorkers.
If coins and metals are exempt in Utah, eBay will exempt them as they have for other states. eBay can NOT LEGALLY IMPOSE A SALES TAX. They are just following whatever the state guidelines are.
I hope so. The link provide earlier just showed a blanket statement that Ebay would collect sales tax beginning October 2019 with no distinction of what might be exempt or not.

By law, they have to collect according to individual state laws. They are already doing it for other states. Of course, consult your state's web site for specifics of the internet sales law.

My wife and I made decision to "Escape From New York" twelve years ago. Now, you want to penalize us for moving to a low-tax state?!?! What I would like to say would get me banned from this forum......
It doesn't penalize anyone to have a uniform tax code on interstate commerce.
Actually , while legal, it is contradictory to say a uniform tax doesn't penalize anyone, when in reality, it penalizes everyone who uses it . Like cigarettes and booze. Seems counter productive and discriminating but .... it is what it is. .

In general, that's true, but that's not the context. There's "penalize" in a global sense and there's "penalize" in a relative sense. Issuing parking tickets to everyone on a street "penalizes" everyone globally. Issuing parking tickets to only red cars penalizes red cars relative to every other color.

Taxing those using the information superhighway to exchange goods and services is okay but logistically , is hard to divvy out those revenues to each municipality, fairly. I cannot see which throne I am to serve. And most can see how costs go up. As long as wages keep up with inflation, we are all fine.
Anyway, I don't buy the idea that taxes are leading business to your door. That's absurd.
Yeah, The funny thing about the tax on cigarettes was the health problems they cause are such a burden. Show me 1 instance where the tax on cigarettes has gone to address that problem other than to dissuade people from smoking. It's just another govt. grab the money and waste it.

Well it doesn't seem to be working for me. 2 of my last 3 sales I was asked to cancel the sales because of the tax being added.
Sounds like a way to lodge a protest on the tax.
One of the sales was in my state where I am required to collect tax. Buyer asked to cancel with a message that he didn’t understand he’s never paid tax on coins. I explained that coins are taxable in our state and I am required to collect. After asking to cancel the sale He was generous enough to send me another offer that was lower by the amount of sales tax that would be added. This all on a nice looking certified coin I was selling for under greysheet bid.
I’m still waiting on sale number 4 to pay. Made an offer I accepted. 3 days have gone by with not a peep from buyer.

Last number I saw it was like 45,000 NY residents moving to FL. Don't worry, NY is trying to get them one last time on their way out! https://www.cnbc.com/2019/03/08/tax-collectors-chase-rich-new-yorkers-moving-to-low-tax-states.html

Same here in Alaska, plus the best views in the world. Oh yeah, an annual cash payout to buy more coins with (PFD).
Former New Yorker myself, the taxes there are insane for what you get.
