1994 SIlver Eagle Grade. Would you send in to grade?

I was considering sending in my 1994 Silver Eagle but the auction prices realized are a huge drop from a MS 70 to MS 69. I thought I would ask the group there thoughts. Any thoughts on the grade???

    No.

The reason for the big price change from 69 to 70 can be found by playing the registry.

Registry owners like/love the perfect “70” for the collection and it increases their score.

Your typical bullion coin, silver or gold, is worth spot at 69 and below. 70 has that registry premium.

Realize, I only posted about the registry and that another reason could be that some just want/really really want a 70. “Just Because”

    IMO

My advice - don't chase 70s in the wild. If you want one, buy one.

The coin you pictured would get no where near a 70, and maybe not even a 69. It is pretty bullion.

If it wasn't for those hits and tics and spotting and coin bumps it would be perfect!

    Yup.....

While the particular coin in question doesn’t appear to be a good candidate, many other “ounces of silver” do justify grading, based on their potential grade and value. So, while you might not care, many others do and your reply failed to address the question that was posed.

    Sorry if I insulted anyone.😉

People do care. Pretending they don't is silly. You don't have to buy slabbed 70s, but why troll people who do?

okay everyone, I said I was sorry.

    Sheesh.

But, honestly, I just think of them as silver, no more, no less.

But, if you enjoy them, then have fun.

You could say the same about common date St. Gauden's $20 gold. They were intended as bullion and they are basically still bullion. Yet a 66 or 67 has collectible value. Why can't a 70 ASE be collectible?

it can be a collectible, but paying crazy prices for 'so-called' perfect coins is the current tulip craze

I agree, personally. I buy 69s not 70s because of perceived value. [I also think 99% of the people can't consistently tell them apart anyway.] But the market is what the market is. People STILL collect tulip bulbs and other flowers. It's just the price that has changed. 70s will probably always be "collectible" as long as coins are collected. The future price is anyone's guess.

I would suggest the OP look at a few early PCGS eagles graded MS70's and get a feel for the strike, luster, no post Mint marks under 5x magnification, etc., under a couple different types of light and angles. Then re-look at the eagle in question and if it looks like the overall average of the 70's in your opinion, then send it in, as the price difference is substantial if you win.

Plus with slabbed SEs you get the added excitement of not knowing what they will look like in a few years. :p

Is it an immortal beauty or is it a ticking time bomb? :o

Got milk (spots)? Only time will tell. ;)

Like everyone says, hard to tell if it’ll go 70 from the pics but I’ve sent in a few moderns over the years that have surprisingly gone all the way unexpectedly...

Like everyone says, you never know but sometimes you just know.

And with the coin in the OP, you know.

But you're right, sometimes surprises sneak through.
