Most of the known history of individual coins is in a collector’s cabinet or SDB. There’s no real history of coins being spent. The most interesting ones to me are the ones that saved lives by stopping bullets in wartime. I’m aware of two of these. Also of interest are counterstamped coins including chopmarks and merchant counterstamps. I like chopmarked trade dollars and other coins along with gold rush merchant counterstamps.

Not sure if it counts as "provenance", but I found both of these in the clean out pit below the pulper at a recycled newspaper paper mill. People hid or lost all kinds of weird stuff in old newspapers, and somehow a lot of it survived the pulper. If these coins could talk, they would say "ouch".

I have a couple of old silver German coins I got after my Dad passed away...no idea where he got them or why he kept them.... Never knew about them when he was alive. He did not serve overseas, so they were not war souvenirs.
