1839-o quarter eagle purchased today - PCGSAU58 CAC
Added this to my certified type set today.
I had purchased the gold spouse coins pretty much from day 2 (I missed Martha Washington for some reason, ended up buying it later).
They never really seemed like a good fit in my collection so I decided to jettison the jetsam and flotsam for something that would look nice in my type set.
I sorta thought I was going to feel a little guilt or regret, but I really don't.
I did, however, just guarentee that the price of gold and the value of the spouse coins should double almost immediately.
Not looking back.

I think, in the long run, you will be happier with the quarter eagle. It also takes up a lot less room!
A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.
A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.
Wow! Great coin! Perfect for type.
Was that from Witter Coin? Great pick up!!
Yes, Witter coins. Literally across the street from where I work. I see them about once a week.
Here is a trueview that I didn't know existed, but is associated with my entry in the registry.
Really nice coin...I just purchased an XF of the same date/mint from a forum member otherwise I might have been tempted...congrats!!!
Very nice!!
Nice looking coin. Congrats! and I like the trade.
Die marriages for Classic Gold are not that well known. A bit more detail on your coin... There are two die marriages for the 1839-O Classic Gold quarter eagle. I call them the High and Wide, and the Low and Close. Yours is the High and WIde. The description is evident after you compare the two marriages.
The date on your coin is High and away from the dentils:

While the 1 and 2 in the fraction are away from and Wide of the bar (vinculum).

On the other dies marriage the date is Low and closer to the dentils:

While the 1 and 2 in the fraction are Close to the bar:

The High and Wide make up two-thirds of the population and the Low and Close one-third.
My favorite US gold : Classic $2.5 and $5.00. Also, what I love about the gold commems is that you are getting US mint gold at darn near melt - your wallet thanks you.
Super nice.
That classic gold piece is nicer!
oh snap, you win!
Very Nice coin, I just ordered my first classic $2.5 about 30 minutes ago. Will post pics after it arrives...
To all others, be careful, perhaps there is a trend starting.
Wonderful coin, @LanLord. Splendid choice. Hard to go wrong with Witter's coins.
I sold most of my quarter eagles a while back. I did receive a '49-D in the mail today but sadly it was a customer's, not mine.
Lance.
I have been waiting for this very coin for years! Nice catch
Great date and mintmark and a killer coin. You sure are getting specialized for type weenie.

As Doug Winter would say, this coin has multiple levels of demand and yours is the perfect grade with the coveted green bean.

You and my 80's-long Long Beach table-mate Mr. Dannreuther have likely already prayed from the same pew with Mr, Bowers in Mintmark and Logotype Heaven. Recall of so many minor and minute variances always amazes me.
While it's an exclusive club, the OP, reading this, can only
be filled with awe at this munificent validation of his reflected brilliance,
That phrase is translated from jumbled garbled fragments of the demotic Greek "Tales of the Medusa" into an failed Esperanto iambic pentameter and then to sardonic recapitulation of Bob Marley's warning to not believe your mirror when you're smoking Kool-Aid and you see the Face of Jah.
Loosely yet rather tortuously translated.
Smoking something else might lead one to believe one's self British and call it "quite charming".
