New Purchase $10 Gold Lib (GTG)

CrustyCrusty Posts: 1,136 ✭✭✭✭✭

Title says it all... I was offered this piece from a friend very close to spot and couldn’t pass her up. Can’t wait to get her in hand. May be the start of a little gold type set who knows....

MS63---No major contact marks with a lot of small tick marks with decent luster. I may grade it differently if I were to examine in-hand under a decent light source with a quality magnifier.

Thanks for all the input. Nobody got it ... it’s actually an MS60 in an OGH... I will definitely be sending her to CAC . What do you guys think? Is it worthy of a gold CAC sticker?

  • lkeneficlkenefic Posts: 8,615 ✭✭✭✭✭

60? wow... I don't know how attached you are to the OGH, but if you're looking for an upgrade... this might be it.

True, I hadn't considered the "premium" that the OGH in and of itself might bring. I guess as more people crack coins from them, they'll become more scarce... and as roadrunner said, there's very little spread from 61 to 63 for this date...

Your second pic looks different from your first pic. The second pic shows a lot more friction in the obverse field. Based on your second pic there's a good chance that it may come back as an AU58.

Sorry about that Smudge... I didn’t know what the proper length of time was to leave the question hanging. Maybe next time I’ll do 24hours. You gotta understand I came from the liberty seated coin boards where we are only use to getting 4 or 5 members posting before the thread goes dark. I guess I just jumped the gun.

Great looking coin and I agree with what @roadrunner posted and do not send in any old holders to CAC at this time.

Sweet! I would pay more for gold CAC green holdered 60 than a modern 63, any day. Send her in!

  • skier07skier07 Posts: 4,404 ✭✭✭✭✭

The coin has nice color and it looks like a 58-62 IMHO. I’d send it to CAC. Aside from the shipping fees there’s no downside.

I like it a lot. My guess would have been MS62.

Very late to this party.... I would have guessed 62....though it is not a piece I would buy... well, any U.S. gold at melt or below, I might buy... but not as a collector piece. Cheers, RickO

I see it getting a gold CAC sticker.

I would have been in the 61/62 camp too based on the pics.

Yep, keep it in the green holder and get the gold bean. NICE!

  • PerryHallPerryHall Posts: 46,913 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'm guessing it got an MS60 grade for a reason. I'm guessing there are numerous hairlines that are not showing up in the pics. There's one way to find out---either crack it out and resubmit it or send it to CAC to see if the gold bean it. If you do, please let us know what the result is.

The 2nd photo tilted in the light shows why it's a 60. Decent coin, but no gold CAC... lots of scuffing in the fields.

It's a coin that looks 63 straight on and 58 tilted.

This was the point I was trying to make earlier in this thread although you made it with greater eloquence. This is a good example of how a photo can hide subtle yet significant flaws on a coin.
