I received this from the gas station. Any ideas ?

Dug up or left outside for a while, so it would be environmental damage and worth face value.

"Nickels" are actually 75% copper and 25% nickel, so they will turn brown if left outside, as noted.

That’s my guess too.

For comparison, I dug these up last weekend near the park gate near my home.
