Hoping Ebay can catch a theif! Disappointed!

I sold 2 coins on March 6th that were stolen(Ihope) form a customer which showed Delivery confirmation. Out of good will ebay made the customer whole. They are listed on ebay by a seller in the same area that probably doesn't know they were stolen. I reported it to ebay so we will see.
Here is the active listing https://ebay.com/itm/1892-US-Barber-Silver-Half-Dollar-50C-PCGS-F12/401775689628?hash=item5d8bb27f9c:g:uZAAAOSwnYdc7X0k:sc:USPSFirstClass!30180!US!-1

If anyone knows this what I believe to be an on the up and up please contact them. I will later today as they are on the West Coast and I have to take my wife to the doctor in a little while.

I would contact PCGS with the certs and back up info, and have them listed as stolen, THEN contact the seller.
Liberty coin is a pretty large company. Call them and tell them the items are reported stolen. They should be able to track whom they purchased the items from. It would be interesting-but they might even tell you it was the same guy who bought it and perhaps lied... popcorn please!
I agree joebb21.
Sounds like your original buyer lied then flipped locally to avoid this type of scenario.
My Ebay Store
I messaged them through ebay.
I really don't think so....time will tell. He has purchased quite a few coins from me.
Edit to add. I also messaged my customer. He told me he had to file a police report and ebay has a copy of it. Seriously doubt he is guilty.
Disregard
strange that Liberty is selling both coins for the same price you sold them for.

The pics:
My pics better represent the coins. They are much nicer. I also thought it was funny they are selling for the same price. Perhaps they saw my coins and didn't realize they were the same coins. Wondering if they will respond to my message on ebay.
I could not believe this is happening almost simultaneously .... what a shame.
Good luck on your recovery effort @amwldcoin
I hope you are made whole!
Liberty coins should have information on who sold them the coins. Would not be shocking if the person who Sold Liberty Coins these Barbers was the original buyer from you on Ebay.
good luck!

The buyer was made whole, as I had tracking and insurance and the delivery was confirmed. USPS insurance was pointless to pursue(I would have if I had been asked to). Ebay made the buyer whole after he filed a police report. I just heard from Liberty Coins and they are checking to see where or who they bought them from.
@arco I absolutely do not believe it was the buyer. They were delivered to a locked mailbox where he lives. I suspect a PO employee.
Wow... interesting case... Please let us know how it turns out.... Cheers, RickO
I purchased a MS63 SLQ from Glenn Holsonbake. coins was sent with tracking and Ins. also. Never showed the day it was shown to have arrived. Couldn't file a claim because the USPS claimed it was delivered. 45 days later it turned up, thought I was out $375. Had I been refunded the money, I would now also have the quarter.
Maybe, maybe not. Time will tell.
I found that odd too. That throws a major plot twist into this.
This needs to be pursued. It could very well end up identifying a thieving USPS employee who has struck before and will likely strike again. Once you have the name of the seller (to Liberty) contact postal inspectors so they can find out if he works for USPS. If he's one of theirs, they will deal with him.

I've gotten all sorts of weird tracking messages when using the registered service.
One time I got "Undeliverable...Physical barrier to address"
When I checked with the local post office they called it a "draw bridge code"
It apparently means there was construction or some such nonsense blocking the location.
E-Mailed the buyer and he said he was under a clear blue sky in the front yard hammock all day????
Said he saw the truck go by but it never stopped.

So eBay did not provide SELLER PROTECTION? I thought if you showed tracking and delivered status, then they provide Seller Protection. Did eBay make you take the loss?
Very interesting.
Paper money eventually returns to its intrinsic value. Zero. Voltaire. Ebay coinbowlllc
Ebay made the buyer whole, Yes I was covered!
Liberty coin is fully on board with this and have ended the listings until it is resolved!
Thought I would also add the coins could have been placed in the wrong Mailbox as it was a condo or apartment complex.
In the early days of ebay I bought a set of VW carburetors from a guy in Oregon, paid $150 and $35 shipping by non usps money order.$185 total.
After a bit I contacted the seller and he said he hasn't seen the money order.
After spending another $25 to track the money order, I found it was cashed by the guys wife....
With that information I contacted ebay, BUT The guy would not honor the sale and Ebay only refunded me 50% of the purchase price....$75.
Could have been someone else who had access to the same mailbox.
Part of the reason for the increase in eBay fees over the last 20 years is that they offer MANY MORE PROTECTIONS that didn't exist 20 years ago. That buyer/seller protection costs money. But don't tell the haters, they'll just yell about it...until they actually need it.
Did the current sale listing get canceled now that the seller has been notified ?
No! The seller ended the listings due to what's going on. Kudos to Liberty Coin!
Are those prices the PCGS price guide prices or did you come up with unique numbers?(yes im lazy to check)
Well the acknowledged something was amiss- but they still havent told you where the coins came from?
You want a name?
I doubt they are obliged to give any info. They will end up being the wounded person and it will be up to Liberty to cough up stolen goods and seek redress from whoever sold the coins to them. Technically I think the coins belong to eBay as they paid out the insurance so to speak. In any case, it's now between Liberty and whoever has a claim on the coins and they don't have to tell all us curious folks who they got ripped of by. In fact, it may be a 'police matter' or 'usps matter' and they can't interfere with an ongoing investigation. That said, I hope they tell Amworld at least if it was the customer who reported things stolen so he knows who not to do business with. That sounds unlikely though.
I suspect they set the price by looking at recently closed auctions--just speculating.
That is outright theft. I realize that due to location/dollar amount etc. (and policies and infrastructure back then) it probably wasn't worth pursuing. That said, with something so clear cut, and now that I'm semi-retired I would go on a crusade to get criminal charges filed. Either against the wife for stealing the money orders, or against the husband for theft of goods (ie not sending the product when he was paid). Probably the former as Oregon is not a community property state. She stole the money orders made out to him. He argues he never got the money. I argue she stole them from YOU. And I would tell him first to give him a chance to just send the dang product and let him deal with his thieving spouse.
I have my own price guide from my experience of buying and selling several thousand F-AU Barber Half's(The combination of both is around $2,000,000). Go look at the F-12 DL just sold for $90 and compare it to my pictures of the F-12 being discussed in this thread.
Either you got a little carried away with zero's, or that is truly are remarkable amount of buying and selling.
The zero's are correct IE 2 million!
That is million with a B.
Ebay made the buyer whole after he filed a police report.
How can the buyer file a police report??? Buyer does not have all the shipping details required to file such a report. a tracking # is not sufficient when filing a report.
AND, normally only the shipper can file a report with USPS. (or any postal service). I asked some time ago at a Canadian Post office. I was told that ONLY the shipper can know exactly what the contents are and can describe these contents correctly. AND, only the shipper is insured, not the recipient.
So, on what grounds did the buyer file this police report? and with what police agency? I believe if it is across different states, it would be the FBI???? and if there is postal fraud suspected it would be USPS security.
so, there is a "hook" somewhere in this story. Maybe not all told? or not told correctly?
we are not getting the whole goods here I believe.
No, the zero's aren't correct as that is 2 billion. $2,000,000 is 2mil.
Yikes!
Yeah, I suspect 2 Billion would probably buy all the F-AU's!

You are confusing a lost package with a stolen one, I believe.
The mailbox technically belongs to the P.O. so if someone steals out of your mailbox, it is probaby Federal.
If someone steals a package off my porch, I would report it to my local authorities.
Remember the coins were marked delivered. Once "delivered" they are the property of the receiver not the shipper.
The initial presumption would be theft from the delivery address. Only subsequent investigation MIGHT MIGHT MIGHT prove them to have been stolen while in USPS hands.
The story seems exactly correct.
Well I am disappointed. I messaged the seller today and was told they bought the coins in a Large collection from a collector at their shop during the Long Beach show or maybe at the show as it was vague. The only problem with that is I sold the coins after the Long Beach show. I guess that was their blanket statement they don't care. I can understand if they don't know who they bought the coins from....but don't give misinformation!
Yes, I agree with this. After having many packages not arrive in my mailbox when tracking says delivered I watch all my shipments daily. If I have a package shows delivered and I did not get it I immediately call my Post Office. Their scanners can tell exactly where the package was scanned as delivered at and then they have to go track it down. The sooner you tell the Post Office the better your chances of getting your package back.
BTW, all my expensive packages go to my PO Box but cheap ones go to my home address.
I have had 2 packages delivered to neighbors in the last 3 weeks.
Complaining to my Post Master has not really stopped this however they do find them after the fact.
I would think your Post Office would look into where the packages were scanned as delivered at. They will not tell you where they were incorrectly delivered to. This info should help you (Post Office and/or Police) solve your problem and whoever got the package could and should be prosecuted for theft or fraud. Even if they were delivered to the intended person if he filed with eBay as not received this is at least fraud if not also theft. Then see who sold to the coin shop that had them on eBay. Someone is in trouble here.
Well, I just noticed it says delivered to an apartment or condo. Depending on how close the boxes are it may be difficult to track the exact delivery.
I gather that Darrell's OK because of the Ebay Seller Protection setup.
My understanding is that the Seller is covered and the buyer is made whole if:
Does anyone know when/how the Seller contacts Ebay about the buyer's claim of non-delivery, and about starting the recovery process?
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
David, I just called ebay when I received an item not received noticed. They immediately closed the case because tracking showed the package was delivered. I talked to them about the buyer and was told they would probably make him whole. I was surprised because at the time he was a new user. Ebay required the buyer to file a police report which he did. He did let me know that ebay made him whole and bought a few more coins from me later.
Thanks!

In many jurisdictions, any fool can file a police report. It's an online form, no human involved. You punch in the data, you get a # back. It gets emailed to the PO and filed in a folder. Some random % are opened and looked at, when somebody is on desk duty.

What should I take away from this very interesting story? Liberty doesn't have a problem selling stolen goods on Ebay? (this is a question, not an accusation) I have two Ebay accounts that got the Ebucks offer on= $8K+ in Liberty gold waiting in my cart for the an update to this matter. Looks like I will look elsewhere
I'm disappointed because they are not doing their due diligence. They have not relisted them on ebay so I do not know what they are going to do. Their other response was it could have been lost in transit. Well....so what...they are still stolen coins! I hope my inquiry to them will inspire them to investigate further. Stolen coins are stolen coins and these are documented.
