Capped Bust Dimes

I just received these from apmex.
Would these two capped bust dimes be considered average circulation or should I ask for replacements?

They are in the same order in both pictures.

APMEX is great for bullion during specials.

Tough call. I'd label them culls and not "average circ"

Wow... they certainly are in far worse condition than the stock photo... I would return for a refund. Cheers, RickO

I'm not sure what you paid for them but I would certainly consider those below average and wouldn't want them in my collection unless they were in my junk silver stash or used for something like a golf ball marker or something like that.

Circulated grades range from Poor 1 to About Uncirculated 58, so these coins are well below "average circulation" as they have problems and detail grade P-1 to F-2.

I would recommend going to specialist dealers such as Dick Osburn Rare Coins, David Kahn, or Brian Greer (all have websites). Talk to them, they have many circulated bust dimes and you can get much better quality for the grade.

There is nothing wrong with collecting lower grade coins such as AG3 to F15 ranges, I have many in that range and they can be very satisfying to own if they are original and have a "circulated cameo" contrast. The specialist dealers can help you with this.

bust dimes circulated quite a bit back in the day. You got a couple of the survivors. If you wish to buy coins sight unseen, you might not be happy with your purchases, so change that habit.

I would not call them average circulated because they are both problem details coins.

I just ordered 4 rolls of Mercs and I had maybe 3-4 that were close to missing part of the date, the rest were full dates, and 10 that were low to mid AU. They were all ave cerc rolls.

Collect raw morgans, walkers, mercs, SLQ, barber q. Looking at getting into earlier date coins pre 1900s.

Not a fan. Stick with bullion from APMEX.

I've heard that the surviving Barber dimes have a median grade AG-3,
which is consistent with the partial roll my grandpa saved from circulation.

The corrected stock photo has a G-4 obverse and an AG-3 reverse.
That is a little nicer than the AG-3 grade I would expect for such "average circulated" coins.

One of your coins looks AG-3, and the other is Fair-2.
So, a little worse than the expected AG-3 grade.

It's more direct to buy such material on ebay - there you should see photos of the actual item, so you can see the actual condition of the item, instead of some stock photo.
