Good to know, however, percentages don't really mean that much without context. I've been successful (and unsuccessful) in making 60%, and lower, offers. When I'm successful, it's because the piece has been marked up like 400%. It's really important to know the market, not just the price, when making offers. I try to ensure the seller makes a fair profit for my offers, even when they are 60% or lower.
I don’t agree with op comment about “erosion of ebay as sales venue.” What is this even based on? My last time checking certified numismatic items for sale on eBay seems pop of these increased. In addition my retail sales have been very strong this year many at margins above plan 30 pct.

Hard to find a decent price for even a raw coin listed on ebay anymore. Overpricing is rampant on ebay.
Sellers get clobbered by having to pay excessive fees. Postage costs are out of control. What seller wants to TPG slab a $10 or $20 or $50 coin for selling on ebay?
I left as a seller of coins a few years because when I considered what I had to pay ebay, the post office and PayPal there was little to no room for me to make any money. I would have had to overprice/overgrade items like is being done now by many a seller of raw coins to come out in decent fashion in the money plus column. I couldn't in good conscience do that so I quit selling.
Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters.

Too bad we can't get anything on the complaint volume by category compared to the total eBay kvetchers.
I kinda think Coins and Stamps would be towards the top.
As I'v said numerous times to Coinstartled and others: coins are an exception in retail. The margins are very low which does make it a challenge to sell profitably in a venue like eBay that has an incremental cost model. But it can be done and a fixed cost model like a B&M has its own challenges, namely volume.

Ditch the welfare squeeze and it would be better for all in long run. eBay uses tactics to attract traffic for Ad dollars fees etc. they put on the Chinese finger cuffs now don’t know how to unwind. GC. Should put some stuff up on BST.

If you were happy with GC, I would think that you wouldn't give eBay a second thought....
Extremely happy with GC, but still lacking the low cost platform that Ebay provided when fees were 3% or lower (much lower over $1000. For dealers in the $30 item range with a store the fees are about the same. The dollar volume advantage on high priced coins like saints has evaporated. With a tip of the hat to Kathy, one's listing page is loaded with competitive adds.
"Don't like the coin listed...try these guys."
When Ebay folds as K-mart and Sears have, for bloated adaption to seller requirements, and as Errorsoncoins mentioned, really terrible phone support, they will be fondly remembered as a once great place to buy and sell coins.
Ironically, the last straw will be something they fought valiantly against, which is taxation on sales. Only a nuisance on a $20 book but a deal killer when a buy has to shell out an extra $100 on a $20 gold coin.

Not hiring employees doesn’t mean not getting into each other’s businesses which they do all the time.
There are a bunch of competitors including Amazon with a growing coin business, Etsy with a smattering of offerings, GC created during the Internet era, along with survivors of the old era, Heritage and Stacks. It’s a pretty crowded market.
Yahoo didn’t just drop out of auctions, their entire business is on the rocks. Google has a very different strategy than eBay (and Amazon) so Amazon is the better comparable here. If you want a FAANG competitor to eBay, support Amazon’s coin business.
I'm surprised more people don't buy and sell on usacoinbook.com
I'm trying it and have a whoping 1 sale so far. Payment is with paypal so the buyer is protected and they do have the option of paying with a check or money order. No listing fees and only a 2% FVF!
Here's what I think of ebay ....... HELL YES! I have been on ebay since 2000 as a seller and 2002 as a buyer (two different accounts). My original goal was to make $1,100 per month profit (house payment). That was quite easy to do for about ten years. Then I downsized and my payment dropped to $350 and that was easy to do yet again. Then paid off the house and just fool around now. I still make money every month buying and flipping on ebay. It'ss work and required dedication and perseverance. But, damn when I buy 3 silver dollars for $800 and sell just one for $10,005 on GC you can't complain. Oh yeah, the coin was raw and I had to get it graded so make that $850.
I sell on ebay all the time, some auctions and some BIN's. BIN's are slower of course but they all eventually sell. There are some things coin related that I do not put up on ebay as the fees eat up the profits, so I do pick and choose what I sell.
GO EBAY!!

Something is way wrong in errorland.
Coinstartled, show us your coins ...... Show us your photographic talent ....show us something neat .... teach us with a photo of one of your coins .....
Yea I am a businessman and promote my error coin business. Hey try this, try promoting your business instead of complaining endlessly about how eBay jilted you.
Please do not forget that not everyone has deep pockets to by what they want. the majority of buyers simply have an opportunity to fill holes or complete a collection at very reasonable prices.
and, I still get more compared to sell to the real cheapo's at our 3 coin clubs on the Island.
Plus, when all the Low end stuff is gone, they will move up to the next batch of a bit better quality.
And guess where they will come when they are ready to "upgrade"?????
I should clarify that I only buy on E-Bay.
Selling there isn't worth it.
I'd rather drill a hole in the holder and use them as tree ornaments than pay that much.
Once I get a box of 20 "mistakes"/dups, I'll figure something out

Fake news works I guess.
Ebay has the lowest fees of anyplace that one would want to sell their coins. Plus the biggest audience by far.
In don’t understand all the talk about eBay being bad without more discussion of the alternatives.
Not arguing there.
I'm just cheap

...and that is a good question. Where are the alternatives. Tech industry was found guilty three or four years ago of collusion as they agreed to not hire employees away from each other.
Yahoo auctions were an early competitor but dropped out. Where is Google? they have a payment service.
Seems that a $2000 item should be able to be transacted online without a $120 fee.

GO EBAY!!
