Anyone following the "Subway Tokens" collection of 144 silver commems, mintmark and variety set?

It's being offered for $1,599,000.00 by MonsterCoinMart, related to our own @wondercoin.

It's currently ranked #2 #1 in the PCGS Registry and looks like a beautiful set!

I'm curious to see how it does.

This set is particularly stunning. If it gets broken up, I'd love to have one (or more  ) coins from it with pedigrees to Subway Tokens.

Great info! The sale description says #2 but the Registry Set indicates this is now the #1 set. I updated the OP. Justin should update the description :)

This 144-piece set is currently ranked as the #2 set in the PCGS Set Registry for this series and also holds the title of #2 for the all-time finest set in this series across all eras!

Maybe enough to move into the top spot, but so will some others, some of those will likely bring some very strong prices. They are probably choosing their targets and strategies now. Great set.

The 1936-D Rhode Island upgraded from MS-67+ to MS-68+ (could be a regrade or new acquisition) after Justin created his description, so that would explain at least part of the set rating increase.

Oh yeah -- this set is on the April page of this year's PCGS calendar. I was pleasantly surprised to see familiar names in the fine print. :)

Given how gorgeous these coins are, has anyone seen his subway tokens?

A few nice coins in that set.

@Zoins hope they toss you a nice percentage from the sale for your marketing efforts ;)

Great info. Here's the 36-D Rhode Island.

Legend sold this a year ago as a MS68 CAC, calling it at MS69. It's a MS68+ now. It sold for $43,475.00 on an estimate of $4,500 - $5,000. Pretty incredible!

    50C 1936-D RHODE ISLAND. PCGS MS68 CAC

Building a high grade, high end, beautiful toned Commem set? If you so, this will be your Rhode Island!

Technically, we grade this coin an MS69. Clearly, it sat undisturbed and probably was never touched since it left the Mint. We can't imagine cleaner or more satiny smooth surfaces. The luster is really strong and beams boldly from all over. A sensational ring of reddish gold/pale green/amber frames the peripheries all over. The centers are a lilac/creamy white color. This is very lively coin. All of the details are really sharply struck and show no softness. The eye appeal is gorgeous!

PCSG 26, NGC 5, CAC 10. The last piece to sell in auction brought $5,040 03/2018. This coins is far more colorful than the piece that just sold. We expect strong bidding here from the toned Commem lovers. Be ready!

    Cert. Number 34629178
    PCGS # 9364

It is becoming an incredible world class 144 pc. commem. set.

We have been working with the owner for a few years now. Our personal philosophy is that Classic Commems. should have a lot of wonderful color. So, the less colorful specimens (older purchases) have been replaced with more beautiful specimens as they become available. The owner is not afraid to “pay up” for the right coins. So, while the set is available for sale, the owner is constantly improving it wherever possible. This includes upgrades such as the Rhode Island discussed here. Laura wasn’t too far off when she mentioned in her lot description that she personally graded the coin MS69. It upgraded to MS68+ the first (and only) time we put it through PCGS.

So, not only has the set now become the #1 set (as discussed here), but also once Justin adds a number of recent purchases, the set should be closing in on a $2,000,000.00 asking price.

Thanks for posting and it’s great to hear some of the background to this collection. It does look like incredible. I’m a big fan of rainbow toned classic commems.

Does the owner also have a set of subway tokens? I’d love to see that as well!

A small correction to "$1.6M Classic Commems Set for sale"

The set is not "worth" $1.6 million. That is the amount the owner's agent is asking. We do not know what anyone - at least any sane-one - has bid, or what the set will ultimately sell for. After the sale, if it occurs, we can say the set is worth $XXX.

Even if the tittle implies a value, the post clearly states that the set is being offered at (not that it’s worth) that amount. You, however, implied that the OP stated the latter.

@wondercoin The back of the wagon on the 1928 OT seems to be leaking PVC which you might want to have remedied by PCGS fast.

What is it worth to you? :)

Even after a sale, the price may not be repeatable so it may not reflect worth the way you seem to be talking about it. For example, is the first sold 2014 gold Kennedy half worth $100K today?

This set is worth $1.6M to the owner and that may be enough for now since that's the price it's available at.

Broadstruck. Thanks for the heads up. I’ll have a look at the coin and take appropriate action. That particular coin was (HOF winner) Bruce Scher’s 1928 Oregon and CAC stickered.

@wondercoin.... Please come back and let us know if it is PVC - or not. Would be strange to find that in such a set of coins.... but certainly possible. Cheers, RickO

The peripheral green is pearlessence the green on the back of the wagon is not.

Bruce Scher’s original set Vancouver was a coin I wanted for years, when the opportunity presented itself PCGS MS67 or not I had to pass as in hand it had a black spot of ED eating into the surface hidden within the peripheral toning.

    @keets

In all sincerity, that’s something I’d be curious to know too. The same inference is seen in many of his books - almost as if he loves the coins but thinks collectors are stupid to pay so much for them. He is an expert on Peace dollars but has admitted that he owns very few, if any. Perhaps he got burned with some purchases as a young pup and decided to go another direction???

  • keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭

RogerB gives us good advice based on his research. for instance, there is another page one thread about a 1901 Morgan with "adjustment marks" wherein he corrects the use of that terminology and points us to a factual reason. when he sticks to stuff like that he is an exemplary forum member and his contributions can be valuable. stuff like this, not so much.

  • BryceMBryceM Posts: 11,721 ✭✭✭✭✭

    Totally agree. Strange dichotomy.

  • wondercoinwondercoin Posts: 16,647 ✭✭✭✭✭

If he wasn’t happy with $1.6M for the #2 set, maybe he will like better $1.8M for the #1 set. Lol.

As asking another member to limit themselves to the only thing you deem fit for post wise is asinine.

I may need to recalibrate myself here. So the obvious left center field scuffs to the side of anchor shaft on the MS68+ RI are more than acceptable for a 68/or possible 69 grade?

Frank, it is noble of you to defend RogerB, but it is indefensible, just as is his position with MFeld. heck, I even like him, own a few of his books and as stated above think he is a valuable contributor(when he sticks to what he really knows). I would call anyone out who does that sort of stuff. no harm no foul. in truth, this reaction by you doesn't surprise me since you have been subjectively critical of my participation here for several years now. I think I know why but it really doesn't matter, it doesn't trouble me or change what I think of your many contributions here. it is sort of funny in a way and I'll survive.

BTW, you might notice that another member tended to agree with me, perhaps you should publicly say something to him. have a nice day and chill out. B)

  • wondercoinwondercoin Posts: 16,647 ✭✭✭✭✭

RR: The “texture” of the satiny smooth surfaces on the RI in hand are like nothing I have seen before. I am personally very comfortable with the overall 68+ grade.

I do believe the “mark” you identified makes the overall 69 grade a challenging grade to achieve. But, I grade the obverse MS69. Laura obviously did as well in her overall assessment of the coin.

    Just my 2 cents.

Frank, I am not at odds with that. read what I posted and you should understand I am in no way questioning RogerB's knowledge of Commems or his prolific skill as a researcher and writer. however, and this is where you are evidently blinded, I do take exception to his persistent habit of criticizing the value of coins and the prices others(and the market as a whole) place on them. my reason, and I gave a reason, is because ** I have never seen that member post about any coin, either that he owns or that he is trying to own**. if you feel that is unfair, OK. I don't.

if you can't understand these facts there's really nothing more to say.

Rather than worry about opinions of a collections' worth maybe some focus on why a scuffed coin is in an MS 68 holder would be more relevant.

“Nice collection, took a look around the site and noticed a 37-s Washington Qtr ms67+ with POR. @wondercoin could you please PM me the price I would like to strongly consider buying it.”

Washingtonrainbows... the 32-P and 37-S (dupe) finest known quarters are currently unavailable as I need them for a future reconsideration submission when I “dust off” all of my silver quarters. I haven’t played “the upgrade game” with the silver quarters in many years now and need to do that first before releasing the dupes. I will tell Justin to remove the (2) POR listings from his site tonight after he finishes watching GOT.
