WLH collectors, fans, novices, x’perts - are xf45 keys, semi-keys a better deal than au grades?

    I like AUs the best for the quality and the price. True AUs are scarcer than hen's teeth, especially among the early dates.

    I think true AUs will hold up better in any downturn...but I still like 45's.

    It really depends on how the coin looks. Get a decent looking XF-45 and save some dough.

    Some of them actually can look better for less moolah.

    Anything with the look of that 1921 is always a worthwhile buy. The 1923-S, maybe not so much.

    I think nice 55's and 58's on some of those better dates are much better value holders.

    I don't even look for pre-1934 AU Walkers. The 1934-1940 AU issues are sufficiently challenging for me, and I like those a lot. I like to think of them as the "extended short set".

    XF coins can be quite attractive, and often reasonably priced. Always consider the coin... it is your opinion that counts, if you are a collector......Now, it is a different story if you are selling.... ;) Cheers, RickO

    I've always heard you should buy the best condition you can afford. What would be interesting is if a researcher checked the price of a BU 16-D dime and that of one grading good. Find out how many in Good you could buy for the cost of the BU. Then see which choice is worth more today. Probably the BU.

    I don’t have any set in concrete preference.

    To me it’s a function with feeling the hole with a piece I like which was a great pickup and good deal. It could be G04 to MS66. Once set complete one could work on upgrades.

    It is about quality for the grade and having an exceptional coin instead of a mediocre coin at the next grade higher. I like the 1921...Even though the 23-s was enhanced, finding one at this level is not as easy as one might think

    If it's an early Walker it doesn't matter much to me if it's 40 or 55, it has to have the right look--no cleaning, no rim dings, and few if any scattered hairlines.
