I'll guess 45 &45, the 2nd one being "silent netted" for some hairlines and a dip.

I love the first coin as a 45. A 40 holder is too low; but your team of respected experts felt 50 is in order, so.....all I know for sure is that it is a really nice example of a tough B-half!

45 and 53. The 03-0 is generally weakly struck on the forelock and "Liberty" ribbon....which makes it look more worn that it is.

Here are the 03's. So if every coin in this post was raw and priced the same which coin would you buy?

  • amwldcoinamwldcoin Posts: 11,269 ✭✭✭✭✭

Wow! Did I run everybody off? I'm surprised there are no comments!

    I am too conservative apparently, I gave the 03's 45 and 50.

Clearly PCGS grades these based upon a weight ratio. Throw 'em on a scale and divide the weight by a MS60 average weight, then assign a grade based upon the ratio. Yeah... that's the ticket...

Would you pick the 03-O over the 06-O?

I was just looking at my pictures of the 1st 06-O. They don't do it justice! In hand the coin looks like you could cut your fingers on the leaves and headband.

Well! The 1st coin was recently graded XF40. The 2nd coin is graded AU53 (I have another that is on par with it).

David Kahn, several others, and myself felt the 1st coin would grade AU50. The customer I sold it to also felt it would grade AU. I told him I would buy it back if it didn't and I did. After looking through several of my PCGS graded AU's he was like....dang...should I try it again? I said not now. PCGS has obviously in my opinion tightened their grading standards on Barber Half's by 10 points. I had every coin in my last submission a year and a half ago come back under graded 10 points. All but full liberty coins came back in VG 8 holders! There was a dozen of those! I have not submitted any coins since and this just insures I will not be sending any in any time soon. Actually I am selling most raw now at what I grade them with out a problem! Of the over 50 coins from my last submission I might have 10 left after cracking them out.

The sad thing is I could probably dip the 1st coin, resubmit and get it in a 50 holder. The purist in me will not do that.

I think part of the issue is inconsistency due to changing grading standards. I started collecting in the 1990s using the Brown and Dunn book (I borrowed from a collector relative) and an early version of Rudy's Photograde. Back then, the first coin was XF all day long; however, there has been a palpable loosening in recent years. Many of the newer AUs were yesterdays XFs and the newer XFs were VFs. Back then a full rim was required to be "good," etc. It appears that PCGS may be going back to the early years. This isn't the only series where I have seen notable tightening.

40 and 53 was my guess on first coins.

Other coins are hard as dark at they are from a picture to me. AU as a guess.

If all four were raw and looked in hand like the pics appear to my eyes I would choose the** '03 O** without much hesitation if the prices asked were the same.

Won't kick any of them out of my collection however.

The 1903-0 AU55 is sharper in almost every respect. Shows more detail on the forelock and "Liberty" ribbon, nearly full stars, eagles head-feathers-shield-claws all pretty sharp...and especially for an 03-0. The other coin seems to hide some of the wear into the uniform toning. Flat stars, flat on Liberty's eye brow, flat shield and inner wings. I'd grade them 3-5 points apart. The 03-0 wins by a wide margin.

The first 06-0 looks XF45. The 2nd at 53 is reasonable. And those look more strictly graded vs. the last two 55's. I also prefer the look and overall quality of the last coin (03-0) among this group.
