What is a "coin show tailgater?"

Went to a coin club meeting and overheard an interesting term: "coin show tailgater."
I've heard this applied to people trying to get free admission or sneak in past security by following a dealer very closely. But this was used in the context of looking at coins in the bourse.
(Already checked -- it's not exclusive to Florida.)

Closest I can get to this concept is a group of Forum members which meets on the lower level parking garage at the Long Beach Convention Center about 4:15 Weds during set-up. At @MrEureka's behest/request, we have an open cash bar and munch some pizza from California Kitchen across the street because we don't like the free tacquitos inside.
The security guys don't worry about smelling ganga, especially if you have pepperoni
But the guys in Florida do something different?
Colombians when they load their trucks.
I've never heard the term. But I'd think it's probably referring to someone being too close behind you/looking over your shoulder, while you're looking at coins at a dealer's table. Not waiting their turn very patiently.
Similar to what @Pokermandude stated but my guess is that it’s anyone who get’s a little too close, i.e., someone that invades ones personal space. Many should known of at least one person that does that.
I was an undersized center when I played basketball and learned to use my elbows very effectively without getting called for a foul. That skill works very nicely when people crowd your space
Maybe they show up early and cook burgers and dogs in the parking lot?

That's like what I do at postcard shows. While I'm standing in front of the table looking at cards, as soon as someone tries to crowd me I slowly extend my elbows out to add at least another 14 inches I can control.
Someone who eavesdrops on your conversation/negotiation with a dealer then jumps in when you leave to close a deal...? (Just a guess.)
Probably small time dealers who do not wish to pay for a table, so they attend the shows and sell off their "tailgate" for a table. JMO

Fine line between eavesdropping and just standing at a space whilst both parties talk loud enough to drown out a Space Shuttle launch.
Unless the 2 parties agree to "hold" an item, once you walk away, it is open season on anything left behind.
I was with my son at a (non coin) show, when the person in front of me picked up an item, asked the price ($30) offered $25, declined. He put it down and left. I picked it up, it was extremely cool, and I had never seen anything like it in the roughly 50 years I have been involved in the hobby. I confirmed the price, gave him the money, and looked at some other stuff he had.
My son was studying the item, also thought it was really unusual. Person A returned, with the $30, and blew a gasket when he found it was sold. The guy who was selling chopped him off, and told him to beat it, as he had walked away.
BTW, there were 2 sold on ebay, a beat up one for (IIRC) for $900 and a nice one like I bought for $1600
I have learned to never leave a sale undone when I walk. Buy it, take it, don't agonize forever, as it just wastes everyone's time. I am digital, yes or no, not analog, (Well, well, maybe, I need to think, um, what, I don't know, etc.).
I go very fast, and sometimes make a mistake, but it is more than compensated by getting the early bird deals.
I have never heard that term...must be a new one...All you members who go to coin shows, check it out and report back...Check the parking lot, lurkers on the bourse, and shady deals in the ante room....

Stay in your lane, and all is well.
thought that was a car load of illegals. I guess not
You mean "bullion dealers" ? Gaaaa -- run the other way!
Butt then so does flatulence on demand!
Maybe the food concessions should sell beans with their hot dogs?
Coin show tailgaters
This. More than likely got the name from using the tailgate of a pickem up truck as a serving table.
Coin Show tailgaters cracking out slabs
Pretty sure its a bunch of dealers eating Hot Dogs with Mustard getting their Stains in place before the show actually starts. Same thing as Football fans before a game.
