Newbie with Newps & Questions!

CoinscratchCoinscratch Posts: 11,139 ✭✭✭✭✭

I realize these Morgans are very common and the cost to re-holder is half of what I paid but, I have a hard time even looking at their holders. So they will soon be in clear w/ blue stickered holders.

Questions: Should I crack open or submit as crossovers? Will they gain, stay the same, or lose a grade? And what would you do?

Secondly, from what I have read and seen, the Cameo SMS coins of the 60's do not exhibit as much contrast as their counterparts. And until I learned that - I never even gave this one a second thought.
Does this one have a chance? Or should I just leave it in its flip?

Thanks in advance peeps!

As you sort of mentioned, the cost of crossing those Morgans from NGC to PCGS is probably not worth the cost, even if they both upgraded, which is unlikely. From what I can see in the photos, neither coin has a great shot at MS65. The cost is just too much when only submitting a couple of coins. Maybe wait for PCGS to have a crossover special where you only pay the fee if the coin crosses?

For common dates, even those with a little toning, you should buy them in the holder you want from the start. Let someone else pay the grading fees.

    Good luck!

Well, it was a small antique store and that was all they had, maybe I should have walked but, I liked the look.
    Howabout the SMS '67?

Nah, maybe just be happy with them in the NGC holders? I just meant that if you know you want a PCGS graded coin, it's certainly easier and cheaper to buy them that way in the first place.

From what I can see on the SMS half, it's at least close to CAM... hard to tell with that angle of lighting though.

I only own a few slabbed coins. I like both the PCGS holders and those from ATS.

IMO, keep them as is. Maybe a year from now you either decide you like them, decide to finally cross them when a special comes around, or you trade them.

I would keep them 'as is'...As far as the Kennedy, it looks like it may be CAM... but hard to tell with the glare in those pictures... Cheers, RickO

These don’t justify crossover expense and just fine in their NGC holders. Blue sheet bid $51 for both TPG for both Dollars.

Some coins where there material difference in blue sheet (usually in higher grades) may be cross over candidates but don’t take a downgrade. I would rather have a 65 from TPG A than a 64 from TPG B.

@ricko . I will take some close ups later and/or just submit with my next order. The frost is thick so maybe a Cam if its consistent.

@Cougar1978 . I will just stack'em then, which is kinda what I thought I just needed to hear it from the pros, thanks. I pulled the price sticker off and the label came off with it...

In reply to your following quoted question, I would leave those Morgans in their original NGC Tombstone Slabs to preserve provenance, and to ensure originality (i.e. that they have not recently been “processed”).

Some Collectors prefer to purchase coins in older generation slabs such as these for the reasons mentioned above...

(PS - I like your Forum nickname which reminds me of Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes!!)😁👍

@stuart Thanks & I don't know why Nugent came to mind as I stared blindly at create user name. I agree the fatty cases are probably the best thing going for those two.

@ricko . Here are some better pics of the 67. Do you think this one will hit Cam?

Actually, looking at those pictures, no..... and again, it could be lighting... but it does not seem to have the distinct contrast between the frost and field....the first picture appeared to be close....Cheers, RickO

Yes that is common for label come off those old holders when peeling sticker off. Does not really bother me but concerned potential buyers may pass. MS 63 and 64 generic Morgan’s really cheap right now, fun to buy, stack up.

No on the Kennedy...I mean, it may cam but probably won't go higher than 66 and that's a losing proposition.....and I would leave the dollars as is.
Likely worth more in older NGC holder with the potential buyers assuming they may upgrade.
No use tossing more money into a pot that you can't win.

@mannie gray Yes, I'm learning that if there is any question, then its pretty much out. I'm on the fence but I will probably have it graded anyway just to fill another hole.

    Common coins in common grades.
Why not leave the retro holders in tact and just find another coin in a clear holder with blue sticker?

Yep, your not the first to mention that, and it makes perfect sense. By the way, I am becoming a Franklin addict myself and am constantly on the hunt for them. In the wild that is because, I'm not ready to lay down hundreds or thousands for them. They are probably hiding in plain sight, like in an old couch at goodwill or a garage sell or possibly a dried up lake bed or old wishing well. Obviously, not getting one in change from McDonalds so you have to get creative...
