Why were there no mint sets for 1982 and 1983?

I have a put together set 1983 P and D in cellophane and was trying to find the value.

During those two years the Mint did not make a Mint set, but the Mint’s gift store were selling gift sets.

The quantities are low and premiums high. Maybe ~$75.

But, there are plenty of proof sets.

Reason: Major federal budget cuts and recession.

Are these from that gift store?

The top and bottom were made by dealers/other collectors. Not sure of the others. Had to go check. None of those are from the gift store. Made by third parties, i.e., dealers/other collectors.

@Kudbegud They held up well in cellophane after 35+ years.

There were no government mint sets in 1982-83 because of the severe shortage of Peeps. Later, a solution was found and the shortage ended, thus restoring the supply of mint sets.

    :)

    Full disclosure
Those pix are from on line and not my sets. My sets are packed away and would take a bit to get to them. I got both mint and proof sets every year. They are tightly packed so I'm certain they will look just like the ones I posted when my executor goes through my "horde" o:)
I do have a note on these items in my excel inventory so, depending on how diligent and interested my executor is, the "rarity" of these sets will be noted and my charity designee's will get fair value.

Would it be improper for me to say that if there was an interest, I would list my extra 1982 P&D souvenir sets from the Mint on BST, here on this thread?

1982 was a little before the time that the mint realized that they could make hundreds of millions of dollars just by putting coins in cellophane or plastic.

Sorry Rooster1, those were assembled by Krause Publications publishers of Numismatic News back then to fill the need and promotion of their coin news paper and magazines.

These are still collectible and several are listed on Ebay along with the Gift Shop "official" souvenir sets. Prices are all over the place for both types. Assembled sets by other organizations and groups are also listed. These could be a sub sub collecting topic to pursue.
