The error is in thinking that this is somehow an error.
We need a sticky to clarify what constitutes an error, what is a doubled die, and a few other tidbits that seem to come up incessantly.
corrosion or also known as
'enviornmental damage';
Ahhh, yes it does, because it is.
Exactly what type of error do you think it is? If you think it is an error you should be able to explain how it likely occurred. You can't simply label every strange looking coin an error.
Just a corroded quarter.
@Benito
Guessing that the quarter was probably fished out of a wishing well/water fountain.
Example:

Composition of quarters:
METAL: 75% Copper, 25% Nickel over a pure Copper center
Some reading material on the “Corrosion of metals” for when you take a break from hunting for “errors.”

Nice scale and it comes with a calibration weight, too.
Enjoy the hunt!
The quarter was probably in the glove box of this car.
The car is not damaged, though,
Environmental damage... appears to have spent time in the ground... Cheers, RickO
