I'm wondering if two different people thought it was a possible new VAM. I see what looks like possibly a decent sized die break on the eagle's leg. If that's the case, then it would be a gem discovery coin and worth it for a VAMer.

That would be one reason for the price.

Maybe it is the rare 1924 S no S variety?
Not even pretty tone.....have no idea why it went so high.
No idea
Collector, occasional seller
Distracting spots... IDK...
Maybe a rare variety????

I'm smelling crack, dip and resubmit. Though that's not going to fix the rim scratches...
Smitten with DBLCs.
Same grade by ATC, auction at Legend this past March sold for over 4K.

Other auctions were between 2-5K. https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1924-s-1/7364
Thinking the seller was hoping for similar results; but ~$790 (with fee) sounds like a good deal for the buyer.

@U1chicago Thanks!
That makes a BIG difference. A ‘24. No idea why the OP’s linked GC auction went for $790. Agree, someone may have mistaken an S with too many 🥃🍺.
Reverse image.

The GC one was a Philly not a San Fran though.
Maybe someone made a mistake thinking it was an “S”?

I think the consignor was thrilled
The coin looks exceptionally clean. My guess is that more than one bidder thought it would grade 66+ or higher.

That would be one reason for the price.

Looks like a bog standard, common date Peace dollar to me. That's way more than 66 money too.
@Treesaurus....Welcome aboard.... I think it was seen as a dip candidate with the potential of a higher grade.... Cheers, RickO
