I knew John Haddaway and Pat's description of him is spot on.
I believe his business name was Island Coins (please correct me if I am wrong).
Sorry to hear this news, and my condolences to his family and friends.

I never heard of him but I am glad you posted this so that those who did know him will know what happened. He deserves to be remembered by those who knew him.

I've known John for 40+ years, since I was a kid. He was the closest we had in this area to a true, honest professional dealer.

FYI, he was famous here for being unwilling to fly (I don't know if that was an absolute), so if you saw him at a show, anywhere in the eastern half of the US...he drove there from MD.

I bought many coins from John and he always treated me fairly and with respect. His lovely wife was very friendly and would sit with him at coin shows and help keep an eye on things. His company was called Island Coins but he never had a coin shop and did his coin business on the coin show circuit and mail order. He worked out of his home on Tilghman Island on Maryland's eastern shore. He was a banker and then used his collection and years of experience to start a coin business after he retired. He will be missed.

John Haddaway was very fair and just a pleasant person to buy coins from...And sell to in the event one was selling a coin of interest... whatever the circumstances. I considered him a valued friend in numismatics-I've had the pleasure or knowing him since 1991. He was an avid Dealer and set up at the Baltimore show (and other local shows) for decades. Over the years, I bought several US coins from him even though my interests in coins became global. There is one coin in particular that I remember that I was thrilled to buy from him... A 1919 WLH that went straight into my WLH Library of Coins bookshelf album... While I have often thought of having it graded, I never did mainly because there are some coins that speak for themselves. And to change that takes something away from what coin collecting was and still is to those that are of a certain age.

John had a lovely wife who was very supportive and was always a pleasure to visit with at whatever the show venue. My sincere condolences to John's family as he will also be missed by those that knew and respected him.

John was a truly nice guy and wonderful to deal with. I got to see him at our local shows and at the Baltimore shows. Noticed he was on supplemental oxygen for the last couple of years. Very sad to hear of his passing.
