I retook pictures of #2 so the lighting conditions would be the same! I took the other pictures 4 years ago.

The first one. I don’t like the cheek of the second. Better detail too.
the top one. fwiw
Trick question? The first one for sure.
Not at all! They both grade the same.
No. 1
I’m not crazy about either coin. However, the first one (which is winning the contest, thus far) appears to have less luster, exhibits a scratch on the face and a carbon fleck under one of the leaves beneath the eagle’s (facing) left wing. So to me, the choice would not be a slam dunk. I’d probably pass on both.

1 for me.
That's actually 3 reed marks from another coin.
Not many choices out there on this one! You are looking at 40% of the current population.
I tend to be particular and patient. And there are other grades available.😉

JA likes #2! The other I seriously doubt he would.
You are going to have to wait a few lifetimes to find a 1901-S finer than the first IMO. Also the bright looking scratch on the face is most likely exacerbated by reflection of light from the photography. Of course, for me and probably most others, the real test is how the coin looks when you have it in hand and are rotating it natural light.
What are the grades?
Of the two, I prefer #1, although #2 has some advantages in detail. Either would be a nice addition to almost any Barber half collection.
The second one has mottled carbon on the face along with a jumble of small nicks and abrasions. That is the most focal point of the coin and an instant turn off, regardless of grade, plastic or green bean. The edges have turned too dark and also have mottled darker toning. Also the reverse has a larger damage hit in the tail wing feathers.
The first coin, while it may have some very minor marks (what coin below 64 doesn't?) looks so very choice and original. That is why I asked if it was a trick question.
I tend to be particular and patient.😉
Unless, for some reason, I’m being forced to choose a particular minimum grade, I’ll look for a lower grade example that’s more pleasing to me.

Of course. Every collector has their preferences and it is your hard earned money.
I would keep number 1

If forced to choose, I keep #1.

Interesting! I have exactly the opposite opinion of you. I guess ya know which one I'm keeping. Did ya notice the big cut above Liberty on #1. The mottling on the cheek is exaggerated a bit in my pictures...that's why I took them again but it still exaggerates their prominence a bit.
They are both 58's and Mark is correct the 2nd coin has original luster while the 1st has certainly had a bath or 2 and is a bit lack luster. The POP is 5 and it is the KEY DATE for an everyman set! The POP was 4 for the longest time until #1 was just made. There is only 1 I have not seen. Of the 2 others 1 is darker and the other is a lustrous Blast White but I haven't seen it in hand so don't know about the surface quality.
I like the first one best.
1
Number one is more appealing to my eyes.
What do the others look like?
With limited pops, it can be tricky to pick one to potentially upgrade or wait and potentially never have one.
I like the eagle on the reverse of the 1st one and don't like the cheek on the 2nd one. Even with the scratch through the wreath on the 1st, it would be my pick.

1st one. That cheek on #2 is my reason.
I'm not a Barber or Morgan fan...……………...
I like 2 better by far.
I like number one because the cheek is smoother.

I like number one... the reverse has considerably more detail than number two...Cheers, RickO
Actually what everyone is concerned about on the cheek of #2 is some light mottled toning which is not as pronounced in hand.
1 for me, for sure.
Well, you asked us and all we can see are the photos you’ve provided.
Even if its only light toning, I still don’t like it. It’s all I can see when I look at the coin. What YOU like is all that matters.
I was actually hoping coin #1 had better luster. I'm glad most like door #1 better as hopefully it will find a good home! Now I just need to find someone who is willing to pay 66 money for it!
