Presidential dollars!! OMG!!! The errors are unbelievable!! What happened??

So I’m still traveling for work and am going from bank to bank down in the Florida keys and picked up 20 presidential dollars/Sacagawea dollars some extremely new and a few not so new, and was amazed at the number of my first search, to see 12 out of 20 has some major issues. Especially my warren Harding. The reverse is the most prominent doubled die I’ve yet to see on a coin but I don’t see any information on it. This is the part of coin collecting I don’t understand. Any explanations??

You shouldn't be that surprised to see no information. The Presidential Dollars series is about as dead as dead can be.

    All glory is fleeting.

There are quite a few Presidential Dollar Doubled Dies cataloged by John A. Wexler here. He's the author and co-author of numerous books on doubled dies and RPMs.

There are links to a page with photos for each of the following:

12 out of 20? I'm a little skeptical that these are 'major' errors.

Please post some pictures of what you have found, and there are those on this forum who can tell you definitively whether you have genuine 'wow' finds, or the more likely mistaken types that are due to Post Mint Damage, machine doubling, etc.

I do hope you have successful valuable finds... but without photos who really knows??

Without photos, we can only surmise.

I'll guess that since the vast majority of the doubled dies listed
for Presidential Dollars are very small (as far as the 'spread')
I'd guess that the OP is seeing mechanical doubling, which
is fairly common on this Series.

    Post mint damage. :D;)

I can believe that 12 out of 20 have "issues" but I expect most are wear and tear (or more specifically, deterioration from getting some sweat/oils from light handling but then no circulation to "season" the patina).

But don't forget....Florida is where a lot of the Washington dollars with missing edge lettering showed up.

@FredWeinberg I’m gonna re visit this topic in a few days with good pictures. Mine are not that good so I’m traveling from the keys to Georgia and will be back next week to take pictures and post. Til then, thanks for the comments

Don’t dip them as you did the cents in “very very warm water.”

    Pics would be nice.

We look forward to the pictures.... though it does seem like you may have machine doubling, since most doubled dies on the presidential series are fairly minor..... I am staying tuned.... ;) Cheers, RickO

@JBK 5 of the 20 were missing the edge lettering. Just arrived in Georgia and will be back in south Florida Tuesday and will post the pictures. And you guys are probably right about the machine doubling. I’ve really been doing a lot of homework so maybe I deserve a breakout session. Couldn’t be in a better place. Although the John Adams reverse on one looks as if he has a spike straight through his face

  • LyndagLyndag Posts: 99 ✭✭

And there’s only 6 spikes on the reverse head instead of 7
