At least it didn't find its way into the landfill.
I've only ever found two "large" pieces of sterling, one was a 1972 Mother's Day plate by I think the Franklin Mint, and another was some weird triangular dish with spherical feet. both around 8ozt.

Funny you mention the landfill....
When I was growing up, my dad was a cop, sometime back in the early to mid 1980's, when I was really young, I'm guessing 7-10 years old, for some reason, my dad had to "guard" the city dump landfill I think there were drug deals happening there or something, but anyway, he was there on the night shift and obviously it was rather boring...
So one night while on patrol, he spots something shiny laying on top of some trash and he walks over to see a silver dinner plate. He picks it up and throws it in the car to bring home and give to me.
The next morning he's about to give it to me and turns it over to find it was indeed sterling! He still gave it to me as that was his initial intention, however he explained to me what it was and advised me to sell it. I didn't even really understand why this plate would be worth money, but obviously I agreed to sell it. Why not, right? I can still remember seeing him inspecting it in the kitchen.
I can still remember going to the coin dealer and him selling it then giving me the money. He knew a lot of the coin dealers back then as they hired off duty police for the coin shows, etc. Likely he was doing that during the 1980 run up. It's a really cool memory and it's most likely one of the reasons the silver bug bit me hard and at an early age.

Lucky duck...I did find a Cambridge creamer with a sterling silver base...but nothing like that- nice!
