Which Proof Silver Eagle do you prefer?

Insider2Insider2 Posts: 14,452 ✭✭✭✭✭

Consider I have two perfect Proof SE and I'm going to let you pick the one you want for FREE! Problem is neither coin is actually "perfect." One has a lint mark that is obvious while the other has a single hairline that you can only see if you are looking for it and the coin is held "just right" in the light. Which would you choose?

The one with the "virtually invisible" single hairline.

It really doesn't matter because I wouldn't keep it. I would sell it for whatever I could get for it to go towards a coin I wanted.

The one with the hairline. I'd say, thank you for the free coin and then, when you were out of sight, quickly sell it. :)

The one with the lint mark.

Given a choice, I guess I'd keep looking...

But keeping to the choices offered, the "lint mark" is at least INTERESTING to me. A "defect" of the minting process. The hairline, on the other hand, could have come from anywhere, and carries no special interest.

I'd want one with some gutter doubling.

I would take the virtualy invisible hairline because it would be hard to find while I appreciate the coin and it is unlikely I will remove it from its case. Also it is a straight line so therefore it would be hard to see than a lint line that is curly. Thank you for the free coin! The silver eagles got to be one of my favorite coin designs along with the saint gaudins and walking liberty!

Lint, as it's on the reverse in the photo. Plus, lint means "as made" to me.

The hairline is on the obverse, plus hairline means damage after it came off the press, to me.

    Which one is cheaper?

Free, you say? Give me either one.

I like the one with the lint mark....and yes, I would keep it, because I do not sell coins. Cheers, RickO

I like this one's picture much better than the other one as well. Sorta "spacelike" looking to me. :)

The one with the lint mark.

While the lint mark might be more visible, its origin as a mint-made defect makes it less objectionable to me. A hair line or two on a 70+ year old proof are to be expected, after decades of handling, but on a modern ASE it seems like more of a defect.

I would not take either one although it is free!

The one that's graded PR 70+ just because most proofs are graded at least PR 69 now a days.

The lint mark is as-struck, no problem there.

The lint mark is a natural part of the process. Like that beauty mark on your face. Peace Roy

Are those pics taken thru plastic? The line looks multicolored as if a scratch in the plastic.

The one with the lint mark.

The first coin with the tiny lint mark is less distracting than the one with the scratch.

The lint coin. Made when produced, so not a distraction to me.
