A Civil War Rarity

OK, so not what you may have been expecting...

I have been collecting exonumia from my hometown and the project has been extremely fun with a large group of tokens extant in trade, transportation and other genres. The Civil War Store card series features 8 merchants with many of the varieties being R9. Recently I came across a real rarity (R9 or so), a black rubber doubled obverse larger token from one of the Civil War Store Card issuers, L.W. Perrin, who operated through the 1860's.

Shown here is the rubber token and then an example of the metallic store card commonly seen.

    I wish my home town had these. Maybe Troy, New York then; and not Michigan.

    Kalamazoo is a great name for a town!

    Is this natural rubber or a thermoplastic similar to Daguerreotype case material, or is it gutta percha? Was this intended as a die trial, or a piece used in commerce?

    Heck, my hometown was so small they didn't have a "Dry Goods" store - just a "Dry" store and a rock to sit on.

    I am wondering if it is a die trial. There are 4 known now, this one and another in black, one in brown and one in red. The color breadth makes me think that it is a trial piece.

    Very nice addition, Brian. I tend to think that this is not a die trial, though. Rather, just a token issued from the same business in hard rubber (as many of them were in those days.)

    If there's just 4 known in different colors they could be samples that had been struck and shown to Mr. Perrin in hope of getting a larger order.

    Never a battle in Kalamazoo unless you count the shooting last week on the north side
