This is the 1st Saint error I've ever seen (if real)
$16,000 is a little steep for a conversation piece.

    Neat I like the way you can see copper in the crack.

    $16K might not be out of line for someone who's been looking for a $20 Saint error for a couple decades.

    They crack due to a planchet mixture impurity... So as long as I'm not seeing a milk chocolate core copper is fine ;)

    The most common cause of cracks in gold planchets was from trace impurities in the ingots. The worst was caused by iron, then lead, antimony and bismuth. To prevent this, gold was "toughened" by careful refining, and the mint made an extra charge for this service when contaminated gold was deposited. By about 1895 almost all of this problem should have been eliminated through use of electrolytic refining of gold and silver.

    The the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle book (available from Heritage Auctions) for additional varieties -- but this one, as Fred W notes, is certainly spectacular - and unique.

    That is a Huge planchet crack!

    The 1923-D issue appears to have three smaller die cracks on the upper obverse running from the I to the Y, on about 20% of MS67's. Check these out, all the cracks are the exact same.

    The cracks you are seeing are in the die not the coin. The crack on the OP's coin is in the planchet so it is a one of a kind. The ones you posted are on the die so every coin that die struck will have the same cracks.

    Weird thing about it is that it looks well preserved.
    Almost as if it had special handling like a proof.

    Closest thing I have to an error is a slabbed ogh MS63 Saint with a totally flat head/face. Yet the rest of the coin is well struck. Only one I've ever seen like that. It's not like later date Saints come poorly struck. Thought it was cool so tossed deep into the SDB and forgot about it....until today. Could some foreign material been on the die? Or was it just localized die wear?
