Alexa... do you know anything about coins?

Well now she does...

I received an email from Amazon a few weeks ago about how easy it was to create a new skill for Amazon Alexa enabled devices. So in a little less then an hour, I typed up a list of interesting (well sort of) facts about U.S. coins from very basic to a little more mid-level range and published it. Who knows, maybe someone out there will activate this and learn something. And just maybe we'll get a few more people interested in coins.

So, if you're really bored and want to check it out and have your Alexa talking to you about coins, here it is:

It's pretty easy to set up and I can log in and add more facts at any time. Maybe you have an idea for an Amazon Alexa Skill that you can create that might help others learn more about our hobby?

    Clearly no one knows what a DD is...

    But, the newer smart devices have cameras, so Alexa has grown eyes!!!

    Well if someone wishes to make a fortune, design an application where I can image an item of any kind and the application will ID it in just a few seconds. This app will eventually exist. Unfortunately, when it does, I will not. :(

    Actually, such apps do exist (Google goggles, for example) but they are not flawless yet.

    Thanks for the info! Actually, my friend, until I can take an image of an Indian dump coin. a 2c Washington Franklin Offset stamp, a piece of WV NC scrip, an 18th Century Symphonian, an American Indian point, a Sevres Porcelain piece, A Pre-Colombian figure, etc, etc and put that into one application to identify it no cigar. What I asked for does not exist.

    The app you want does exist, just not in the quality yet required. That doesn't require a new app, it requires better imaging and better AI in the system the app is running on. It's rather like saying electric cars don't yet exist because they don't have the cost or range of gas-powered vehicles.

    And, there are probably better systems than Google Goggles which is a Google freebie. Consider the image recognition software they use to identify fugitives in airports in crowds of humans, even if said fugitive is wearing glasses and a hat. You've also got spy satellites that identify all kinds of objects from hundreds of miles away against very complicated backgrounds.

    Whenever I ask Alexa something in particular, she always says "Let's change the subject"...... :D

    Try this next time: semantics. It requires ** at both sides of the word. I use it for emphasis since we don't have color options on CU.

    PS I want an application where I take an image of a coin, post it to may computer "Wally Coin Wizard" app and in several seconds it is identified. Same goes for a stamp variety, a CWT, an insect, a fossil... Much of this is available if you have the TIME and the resources. Do you have any idea how long it would take me to ID the coin above?

    For some reason I have no problem with my Alexa constantly listening to every sound in my home... but I'm just not ready to get one that has a camera on it too.

    I haven't read Orwell in a long time, but that's just too close to buying "big brother" and installing it myself!

    I do not use 'Alexa'...However, I have heard others that do use it. I consider it just another tool to make people more dependent on technology, and by default, more lazy. In the long run, it serves to 'dumb down' the population. Taking away the ability to think for oneself, and learn through research, is detrimental to the human mind and kills incentive.     There are currently 7.7B people on the planet and something like 2.4B jobs. The pop number is growing and the job number is supposed to drop by 40% over the next 20 years. There be some interesting implications in that...
