I took this photo of a Dr. Seuss tree down the street from where I was staying in Hawaii Kai last week:

In the interim there is always Roger's post on "The Dr. Seuss Coin."
"Most readers are familiar with Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel) and his books for children. But during WW-II he was editorial cartoonist for the New York City newspaper PM. His cartoons lambasted Hitler and Mussolini, and he was especially critical of isolationists, notably Charles Lindbergh, who opposed U.S. entry into the war. The cartoon presented below shows Seuss' design for the new "Lindbergh Quarter" and features the reoccurring theme of an ostrich with its head stuck in the sand - ignoring the rest of the world.

Dartmouth named their medical school the Geisel School of Medicine in 2002. He and his wife were the most significant donors in the history of the school.
Guess nobody wanted a diploma from the Dr. Seuss School of Medicine.

A couple of good books show the other side of Dr. Seuss (not children's books) - The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss, and Dr. Seuss Goes to War: The World War II Editorial Cartoons of Theodor Seuss Geisel.
The pardon is for tyrants. They like to declare pardons on holidays, such as the birthday of the dictator, or Christ, or the Revolution. Dictators should be encouraged to keep it up. And we should be encouraged to remember that the promiscuous dispensation of clemency is not a sign of political liberality. It is instead one of those valuable, identifying marks of tyranny.
